Area roundup: Jones’ 33 help CCS win Red Devil Classic

DeAngelo Jones scored 33 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 91-85 win over Yakima Valley in the title game of the Red Devil Classic on Sunday in Longview, Wash.

Preston Wynne added 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists for the Sasquatch (3-0). Taylor Pettersen scored 11 points and Brady Bagby added 10.

CCS next plays in the Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic beginning Friday.

• Petar Joksimovic scored 21 points to lead five Cardinals in double figures as North Idaho College beat Peninsula College 103-72 at the NIC Thanksgiving Tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

Michael Middlebrooks added 16 points and 19 rebounds for NIC (7-0). Keon Lewis also scored 16, Jordan McCloud added 14 and Antione Hosley scored 13. NIC opens the Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic on Friday.

Women’s basketball

Five Pirates scored in double figures as Whitworth beat Chapman 81-62 at the Posada Royale Classic in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Lexi Belcher scored 17 points and Kayla Johnson scored 12 with 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates (2-4). Emily Guthrie scored 16 points, and Lauren Picha and Kendra Lahue each scored 10.

Johnson and Guthrie were both named to the all-tournament team.

Whitworth, which had been tied or led at halftime of three of its four losses, led the Panthers by 14 at halftime and led by as many as 23 in the second half.

The Pirates open Northwest Conference play Friday at home against Lewis & Clark.
