Knight, Gardner second in Sunfair; Cheney wins small-schools title
The only thing that stopped North Central’s Katie Knight from winning the girls cross country race at the Sunfair Invitational Saturday at Franklin Park in Yakima was a course record set by Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale.
Knight finished the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 19.5 seconds. Knight challenged Neale in the final mile, but the Glacier Peak junior pulled away and crossed in 17:03.9 to win the premier flight and shatter the previous course record mark of 17:10, set in 2004.
Third place went to Shadle Park junior Kendra Weitz, who finished in 17:49.7.
The Cheney team, led by Sanne Holland’s 10th-place finish, won the small-schools division. Holland finished in 18:23.6 as the Blackhawks dominated the rest of the 1B-2A schools.
Riverside’s Jess Mildes finished 12th in 18:28.0.
In the boys race, Kamiakin’s Anthony Armstrong passed Mead’s Andrew Gardner in the final 100 meters to take first place. Armstrong posted a time of 15:07.7 and Gardner crossed in 15:09.6.
Also finishing among the top 10 was Lewis and Clark’s Sumner Goodwin, who took seventh in 15:30.3. The Tigers took fourth among 4A schools.
