Cubs make their move, land Epstein
MLB: Theo Epstein is joining the Chicago Cubs as president of baseball operations.
The 37-year-old Epstein resigned from the Boston Red Sox on Friday night with a year remaining on his contract as general manager to run a team that has gone 103 years without a World Series championship.
With Epstein at the helm, the Red Sox ended an 86-year World Series championship drought in 2004 and won the title again in 2007.
With Epstein gone, it is widely speculated that he will be replaced by Red Sox assistant general manager Ben Cherington. An announcement is expected Tuesday, the next day off in the World Series.
Pac-12 suspends 10 players after fight
College football: The Pac-12 Conference suspended 10 players for their involvement in a fight that occurred during the first half of the UCLA-Arizona game Thursday night.
Bruins wide receiver Taylor Embree and Arizona cornerback Shaquille Richardson were penalized by game officials for unsportsmanlike conduct and ejected from the contest for fighting with 4 seconds left in the first half. They both will have to sit out another game.
UCLA defensive tackle Cassius Marsh was given a two-game ban. Four players were suspended for one game and three for one half.
• Louisville player breaks neck: Louisville coach Charlie Strong says cornerback Anthony Conner broke his neck when his head hit the knee of Rutgers receiver Mohamed Sanu, but he isn’t paralyzed.
Strong said Conner was able to squeeze hands and raised his hand, which made his teammates feel he’d be OK. But the coach found out about the severity of the injury later during Louisville’s 16-14 victory Friday.
• Syracuse drubs West Virginia: Ryan Nassib threw three touchdown passes to tight end Nick Provo, Dorian Graham returned a kickoff 98 yards for another score, and Syracuse stunned No. 11 West Virginia 49-23 at Syracuse, N.Y.
Unbeaten Red Wings belt Blue Jackets
NHL: Johan Franzen scored two power-play goals and added an assist, and Valtteri Filppula had a goal and three assists to help the Detroit Red Wings remain unbeaten with a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit.
Detroit (5-0-0) and the Washington Capitals (6-0-0) – who play the Red Wings in Washington tonight – are the NHL’s only unbeaten teams.
Leonard, two others in lead at PGA event
Golf: Justin Leonard had a 9-under 63 for his lowest round of the year, tying for the lead with Henrik Stenson and Bio Kim at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The leaders were at 12-under 132.
Webb Simpson and Luke Donald are battling for the money title, and they both played the opening two rounds at 7-under 137. Simpson has a $363,029 lead.
Spokane’s Alex Prugh shot a 71 in the second round and missed the cut at 147.
• Munoz, Nordqivst atop leaderboard in Taiwan: Azahara Munoz of Spain shot a 6-under 66 to share the lead with Anna Nordqvist of Sweden after the second round of the inaugural LPGA Taiwan Championship in Yang Mei.
Americans Katie Futcher (70) and Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.), who shot a 71, were at 140 and 142, respectively.
Zags’ Redmon sharp but USA loses opener
Pan Am Games: In women’s basketball, Argentina defeated the United States 58-55 in an opener at Guadalajara, Mexico.
High schooler Breanna Stewart led the U.S. with 18 points and 21 rebounds. Gonzaga’s Katelan Redmon, of Spokane, had 16 points and eight rebounds in 36 minutes of play. Kayla Standish of GU had two rebounds and two steals in 8 minutes.
Ex-Coug and Eagle Mixon sentenced
Miscellany: Terry Mixon, who played one season for the Eastern Washington football team in 2007 after leaving Washington State without playing for the Cougars, was sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement with a series of bank robberies in the San Diego area.
Mixon was a top junior college recruit at defensive back, but arrived at the Cougars’ camp out of shape after having surgery on a broken foot. He left WSU in September 2007 and transferred to EWU. He left EWU after the football season.
Mixon was one of four defendants to be sentenced for five robberies committed between September 2008 and January 2009.
• Brezina leads Skate America: Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic led after the men’s short program at Skate America in Ontario, Calif.
Brezina successfully completed a triple flip-triple toeloop combination as part of a clean program, unlike several of the other men who fell or scaled down their required combinations. He decided to leave out a quad just before taking the ice.
