In brief: Free piano concert with Peter Mack

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Steinway Piano Gallery, 13418 E. Nora Ave., will host a solo piano concert on Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The event will feature Peter Mack, professor of piano performance at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

Mack will perform works by Scarlatti, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. He has played in Ireland and New York and is known for his extensive repertoire both in solo and collaborative works.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Mack also will conduct a master class at 11 a.m. The public is invited to observe him working with several area students.

Pizza lunch to benefit Junior Achievement

RIVERSIDE – Junior Achievement will have its annual Hula Bowl Kick-off with a pizza lunch on Wednesday at noon in the conference room at Sterling Savings Bank, 111 N. Wall St.

The family friendly event will include contests and prizes, sponsorship possibilities and an opportunity to learn about Junior Achievement.

Events commemorate 9/11 anniversary

SPOKANE VALLEY – Members of the community are invited to attend the Patriots’ Day Memorial Ceremony on Sept. 11 to honor those who lost their lives.

The ceremony will begin with a march and procession at 1:30 p.m. inside the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., and will conclude in the grandstand area. Speakers will include Spokane Valley Fire Chief Mike Thompson and Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Kenezovich. There will be a bell ceremony; flag folding; a 21-gun salute; a performance of “Amazing Grace”; and taps.

Participants in the memorial ceremony include Spokane Valley and Spokane City fire departments; the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department; the Washington State Patrol; the Spokane City Police; and the Spokane County Pipe and Drum Band.

The commemorative event is free and open to the public.

Also, at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time (5:46 a.m. Pacific Time), the time the first twin tower of the World Trade Center was hit, the Spokane Valley Fire Department will place a beam from the World Trade Center in front of the new building at Fire Station 8, 2110 N. Wilbur Road. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

Choral group plans 9/11 memorial concerts

EAST CENTRAL/COEUR D’ALENE – Spokane Choral Artists, a group of local professional singers and music teachers, will perform “Songs of War, Peace and Requiem, a Sept. 11 Memorial Concert” on Sept. 9 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 2120 E. First Ave., and Sept. 10 at the Human Rights Education Institute, 414 W. Mullan Road in Coeur d’Alene, at 7:30 p.m.

The commemorative concert will feature local guitarist Paul Grove.

Tickets are $10 per person. Proceeds will be donated to an outreach program of the choral group’s choosing.
