WSU volleyball edges Portland, routs Nevada

Meagan Ganzer tallied a career-high 31 kills to guide Washington State to a five-set win over Portland Friday night at the Portland Nike Invitational volleyball tournament in Portland. Match scores were 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12.

Camryn Irwin had 56 assists, five blocks and three aces for the Cougars, who improved to 4-1 on the season.

The Cougars had no trouble with Nevada (0-4) in their first match, beating the Wolf Pack 25-17, 25-21, 25-20.

Ganzer had 16 kills and six blocks to lead WSU. Rachel Todorovich had seven kills and Irwin added 31 assists and two aces for the Cougars.

Washington State will play Butler (0-5) and Texas A&M (5-0) today in the second day of the tournament.

• Three Boise State (3-2) players reached double digits in kills as the Broncos beat Gonzaga 25-23, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23 at the Northwest Challenge at Gonzaga.

Laura Day had 13 kills and 12 digs and Denise Van De Mortel dished out 43 assists to guide the Bulldogs, who fell to 3-2 on the season.

Gonzaga plays Washington at noon today.

• Eastern Washington University beat Presbyterian College 25-23, 25-16, 15-25, 26-24 in the Eagles’ second match of day at the Lodge on Desert Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

Shelby Puckett had 11 kills to lead the Eagles (3-3).

The Eagles lost their opening game to Cal State Fullerton (2-2) earlier in the day 25-20, 25-16, 25-20.

Cora Kellerman had a team-high nine kills and Puckett had eight kills, eight digs and four blocks to lead Eastern Washington. Chenoa Rossi-Childress added six kills and five blocks for EWU.

The Eagles will play their final match of the tournament today against Arizona.

• Idaho stumbled at the Varney’s Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., losing both of its matches.

The mistake-prone Vandals fell to Brigham Young 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 in their opening match. Idaho committed 27 errors on 112 attempts.

BYU (4-2), meanwhile, had 37 kills and just 14 errors on 102 attempts.

Allison Walker had nine kills and four digs, Alicia Milo had seven kills and Alyssa Schultz had six to lead the Vandals.

In their second game, the Vandals lost 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 to Kansas State (4-2).

Idaho (1-4) will play its final game of the tournament Sunday against Georgia Southern.

• Pacific Lutheran (2-0) made quick work of Whitworth at the Puget Sound Invitational in Tacoma, beating the Pirates 25-16, 25-23, 25-21. The match was the second of the day for both teams.

Ka’ipo Rocha had 12 kills and Bree Riddle handed out 24 assists to guide Whitworth (1-1). In Whitworth’s opener, Kaimi Rocha had 18 kills and 22 digs to guide the Pirates past UC Santa Cruz 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-12.

Bree Riddle dished out 35 assists for Whitworth.

Men’s soccer

Robby Ubben scored off a corner kick from Sean Bushey in the second half, but neither team scored in two overtime periods as Whitworth and Carroll played to a 1-1 tie in Waukesha, Wis.

Carroll took 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, benefiting from an own goal.

Whitworth is 1-0-1 on the season and Carroll is 0-0-1.

• Victor Calderon scored in the 107th minute to give 14th-ranked UC Irvine (3-0-0) a 2-1 win over Gonzaga (0-2-0) in nonconference play at Irvine, Calif.

Women’s soccer

Micaela Castain scored two goals to lead the Washington State women’s soccer team to a 3-0 nonconference win over Wyoming at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman.

Castain, a who led the Cougars (3-1-0) in goals last season, scored her first goal of the season in the 18th minute off of a header from teammate Jocelyn Jeffers.

Castain put WSU ahead 2-0 with a goal 5 minutes into the second half. Katie Turney assisted on the play.

Freshman Katie Skelton capped the scoring in the 86th minute with a goal assisted by Kayla Johnson.

Wyoming fell to 2-3-0 on the season. Washington State hosts Weber State Sunday at 11 a.m.

• Emma Dolcetti’s goal three minutes into the game held up as Gonzaga (3-2) beat Weber State 1-0 in a nonconference game in Spokane.

Dolcetti’s goal came at 3:16 of the first half. It was assisted by Cricket Harber.

• Tillie Bill scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute to give Illinois Wesleyan (1-0) a 2-1 nonconference win over Whitworth (0-1) in both teams’ season opener.

The Pirates’ Jill Pecka knotted the game at 1 with a goal in the 56th minute

• Idaho scored three first half goals and cruised to a 4-1 win over Idaho State in the Governor’s Cup in Moscow.

Lilly Archer, Bailey Hewitt, Jill Flockhart and Chelsea Small scored for Idaho (1-2-2).
