Heroes Day at Whitworth

College football: Saturday will be Heroes Day in the Whitworth Pine Bowl during the Pirates’ home football game with Pomona-Pitzer, honoring local military and first-responders in recognition of the tenth anniversary of the events of 9/11.

In remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Whitworth will give free admission to all active, reserve and retired local members of the military and to local first responders (law enforcement, fire, EMT, etc.). Those members of the community and up to three other family members will be allowed into the game for free by showing official I.D. at the gate.

“As we approach the ten-year anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, it is imperative for us to pause and reflect on the events of that day,” said Whitworth’s Director of Athletics Aaron Leetch. “And as we remember, we would like to take the opportunity to honor those that defend and protect our our lives and our freedoms each and every day.”

Whitworth will honor these valuable members of our community with a special recognition prior to the game, in conjunction with the national anthem.

Chiefs have two in the Tri-Cities

Hockey: The Spokane Chiefs, minus four veteran players headed for National Hockey League camps, put their perfect preseason record on the line in Tri-City this weekend.

The Chiefs, who won three games against U.S. Division rivals in Everett last weekend, face Seattle for the second time this afternoon and rival Tri-City Saturday night.

After that, Spokane has its lone home game of the preseason on Thursday before returning to Tri-City for the final game. Then it’s back to Tri-City to open the regular season on Sept. 24.
