UW’s Williams splits Walker Cup matches
University of Washington junior Chris Williams, a Moscow High graduate, split two matches at the Walker Cup in Aberdeen, Scotland, although Britain & Ireland defeated the United States 14-12 on Sunday to win the cup for the first time since 2003.
The hosts needed 13 1/2 points to win the title and took an insurmountable lead after 17-year-old Welshman Rhys Pugh won his singles match against U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft 2 and 1 and Steven Brown halved with Blayne Barber.
Paul Cutler than halved with American Patrick Cantlay in the final match of the biennial event between leading amateur players.
Williams and Cantlay lost 5 and 3 in their foursome (alternate-shot) match in the morning, then Williams rebounded by defeating Alan Dunbar 1 up in a singles match.
Women’s soccer
Chelsea Small scored a pair of goals and Katie Baran had her first career goal as Idaho held off a North Dakota rally for a 3-2 win in the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula.
Marissa Fehrman made four saves for the Vandals (3-3-2), who were outshot 18-9 by the Bison.
Small extended two school records. She holds the Idaho career marks with 27 goals and 11 game-winning goals.
The Vandals host Washington State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• Tishia Jewell had a goal and an assist as the University of Central Florida beat Washington State 2-0 at the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic in Charlottesville, Va. Gurveen Clair made a pair of saves for the Cougars (4-2-1).
Washington State’s next match is Thursday against Gonzaga in Spokane at 4 p.m.
Men’s soccer
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Jake Bishop scored with 10 seconds left to send Whitworth to its first loss of the season, 2-1 in Forest Grove, Ore.
Dion Coxe scored his second goal of the season for the Pirates (2-1-1), and Brian Sherpe made eight saves.
Whitworth visits Forest Grove again Saturday to take on Pacific and faces George Fox on Sunday in Newberg, Ore.
Fishing
Joey Nania of Liberty Lake finished fifth at the Bass Pro Shops BASS Central Open on the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla., with a three-day total weight of 31 pounds, 14 ounces. Nania’s finish was the best of his career in an Open Series event.
