Cougar baseball shuts out Utah

Freshman Tanner Chleborad shut out Utah for 7 2/3 innings as Washington State beat Utah 6-0 in Pac-12 baseball Sunday in Pullman.

Chleborad (2-0) struck out eight for the Cougars (18-14, 5-6 Pac-12). Jason Monda went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for WSU.

• Brock Slavin hit a three-run home run and Andy Hunter pitched a complete game as Gonzaga beat Santa Clara 4-1 to complete a sweep in West Coast Conference play in Spokane. Marco Gonzales also drove in a run for the Bulldogs (25-9, 6-3 WCC).

• Whitworth beat Pacific 3-1 in Spokane, moving within a half-game of the first-place Boxers in the Northwest Conference standings.

Spencer Arnett (5-3) went 6 2/3 innings and allowed one run on seven hits. Kevin Valerio, Erik Nikssarian and Gerhard Muelheims drove in runs for the Pirates (20-12-1, 13-5 NWC).

• Washington scored twice in the ninth inning for a 5-3 Pac-12 victory over California in Berkeley, Calif. The Huskies (18-15, 5-7 Pac-12) broke a five-game losing streak.

Softball

Whitworth and George Fox split a doubleheader for the second straight day, with the Pirates winning the first game 6-0 and the Bruins winning the second game 3-1 in Newberg, Ore.

Taylor Gilbert tossed a shutout for the second consecutive day for Whitworth (19-21, 13-15 NWC), which completed its season.

• Kaitlin Inglesby pitched a complete game and had a bases-clearing double as Washington (35-9, 6-8 Pac-12) beat UCLA 5-2 in Seattle.

Golf

WSU’s men’s golf team finished fifth at the 11-team Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Cougars finished at 14-over 878. Iowa won with an 840.

WSU’s Kent Hagen finished tied for 11th place with an even-par 216. Iowa State’s Nate McCoy was the medalist at 202.

Rowing

WSU’s Varsity 4 boat finished first in Group B action, while the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 each took second-place finishes in their Group B finals on the final day of the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif.
