Gonzaga slips past Seattle

The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored a pair of goals 3 minutes, 15 seconds apart late in the second half to pull out a 2-1 victory over the visiting Seattle University Redhawks in nonconference men’s soccer on Sunday.

Race Sciabica took a pass from Marshall Kosaka and scored at the 14:39 mark to put the Redhawks up 1-0.

The lead lasted until the 71st minute when Lars Ludwig scored unassisted in traffic from 18 yards out. It was Ludwig’s first goal as a Bulldog. He is a sophomore transfer from Woellstein, Germany.

Conner Bevans picked a great time to score his first collegiate goal.

The freshman took a pass from Clark Phillips and scored straightaway from just inside the 18 for the game-winner for Gonzaga (1-1).

Women’s soccer

Freshman Heather Johnson notched her first career goal 6:11 into the second half to help the Gonzaga Bulldogs knock off the visiting Boise State Broncos 2-1 in nonconference play.

Jessica Bennett found the net from 20 yards out to stake the Bulldogs (3-1) to a 1-0 lead at the 39:54 mark.

The Broncos (2-2) pulled even with 37 seconds remaining in the first half on a header by Erica Parks.

Sila Tuiofea and Morgan Manchester picked up assists on GU’s first goal and Tori Lee assisted on the game-winner.

• The Idaho Vandals (2-2) used a strong finish to post a 2-0 nonconference victory over the North Dakota State Bison (1-3) in Moscow.

The game was scoreless until the 70th minute when Jill Flockhart sent a cross to Chelsea Small who buried it in the net for a 1-0 lead.

Junior Breanna Wilson capped the scoring for Idaho with her first career goal at the 83:17 mark.

Vandals keeper Liz Boyden needed just one save to earn her second shutout of the season and 13th of her career.

• Taylor Ritzman tallied a hat trick – with all three goals coming in the second half – to spark the Seattle Redhawks to a 3-0 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-2) in nonconference play in Seattle.
