Man arrested after fleeing police again

Associated Press

BELLINGHAM – Whatcom County authorities said a man with a history of fleeing from police was arrested after a police chase through Skagit and Whatcom counties ended with a crash and an armed standoff.

The Bellingham Herald reported that the man was wanted on several warrants. It wasn’t immediately clear just how Tuesday’s chase began.

It ended in the Bellingham area after a blue Lincoln Continental hit spike strips and stopped. Officers said the driver was waving a handgun but didn’t make any threats.

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said 30-year-old Adrian Sassen Van Elsloo was arrested Tuesday night. Officers used nonlethal ammunition.

In 2001, court records show the man was eluding a patrol car when sheriff’s Deputy Matt Herzog was killed. A deputy in training was driving with Herzog in the passenger seat. Herzog was killed when the patrol car crashed.

In September, Sassen Van Elsloo was named as a suspect in another high-speed chase through Bellingham.
