Knights take team title

Gabe Meyers and Taylor Watkins won their respective weight classes Saturday and the East Valley Knights cruised to the title at the Battle at Beasley wrestling tournament in Pullman.

Meyers defeated West Valley’s Auston Hilderbrand 3-1 for the championship at 132 pounds. He beat Shadle Park’s Connor Kerr and Gravoer Escobar earlier in the day.

Watkins won four matches at 170 pounds, including a 3-2 decision over Olympic’s Zeke Gaeta for the title.

Brenton Goodwater (113 pounds), Chance Blackburn (145) and Nick Gonzalez (160) all took second place for the Knights.

Moses Lake was second, followed by Clarkston, Olympic, Shadle Park, Hermiston, Sedro-Woolley and West Valley.

• St. Maries had three weight-class champions and took first place at the Freeman Winter Classic at Freeman. The Lumberjacks’ Josh Richmond defeated Post Falls’ Dylan Schilling 15-3 for the title at 120 pounds. Joe Bloomsburg (152 pounds) and Matt Speelman (182) also won individual titles for St. Maries.

Freeman was second. Billy Sims (138) and Preston Hoppman (145) won individual titles for the Scotties. Coeur d’Alene was third, followed by Colville, Priest River, Post Falls and Cheney.

Coeur d’Alene’s lone champion was Darrian Robinett, who beat St. Maries’ Nick Anderson 7-3 at 195 pounds.
