In brief: Many adoptable cats for special price

From Staff Reports

The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service received a record number of cats at its shelter Thursday.

Twenty-five cats came into SCRAPS and Director Nancy Hill said the center’s “cat room” was nearly filled by the influx.

On an average day, the agency receives five to seven cats. SCRAPS is offering a one-day special on adult cats today.

“You will be able to adopt a cat for only the price of the $15 pet license and these cats will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, licensed and receive a free veterinary checkup,” Hill said.

The special will take place from noon to 5:30 p.m. at 2521 N. Flora Road. SCRAPS can be reached at (509) 477-2532.

Man surrenders after arson, killing threats

A man threatened to burn his mother’s house down, kill people and kill himself, prompting a standoff Friday that ended peacefully.

Spokane police responded to the scene on the 7400 block of North Perry Street about 7:15 p.m., said Sgt. Tracie Meidl. Hostage negotiators managed to talk the unidentified 50-year-old man into surrendering, and he was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The man, who told police he was armed with a gun, lives in the duplex home with his mother, Meidl said.
