Whits remain No. 10

Whitworth will enter the Northwest Conference men’s basketball championship tournament this week as the 10th-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country and riding a nine-game winning streak.

The Pirates (22-3), who entertain Lewis & Clark (14-11) in one semifinal Thursday night at 7, retained the No. 10 spot in the D3hoops.com poll for a second straight week.

The other semifinal matches No. 3 seed Whitman at No. 2 Puget Sound.

If Whitworth beats LC, it will play host to the NWC championship game on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Arena football

With their season opener three weeks away, the Spokane Shock made several roster moves Monday.

Added were linebacker Freddie Harris, wide receivers Chaz Rodriguez and Cortez Smith and offensive lineman Chad Peppars. OL Collin Cardell and defensive back Jose Perez went on re-assignment, while WR Joe Hills and cornerback BJ Dennard were placed on the physically unable to perform list.

Spokane opens the season March 12 against the Iowa Barnstormers at the Arena.

Boys basketball

Grangeville 43, Coeur d’Alene Charter 32: The Panthers (13-9) nursed a two-point lead (23-21) into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t keep up with the Bulldogs in being eliminated from the Idaho District I-II 2A tournament. RJ Howlett led Charter with 13 points, including two 3-pointers. Bryan Smith added 10.
