On February 12, 2012 Joshua passed away in a tragic car accident in Lake Charles, Louisiana.


Joshua was born April 2, 1984, in Anchorage, AK.

Joshua moved to Spokane, WA in 1985 with his family and lived in Spokane until 2010.

Joshua graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, WA in 2002.

He then worked as a Finish Carpenter in his Dad (Greg Payne’s) contracting business until 2010 when he enrolled in Divers Institute of Technology (DIT) in Ballard, WA to train as a Deep Sea Diver.

Joshua graduated with honors from DIT in September 2011.

Josh had recently moved to Lake Charles, LA to work in his dream job as a deep sea diver.

Josh started his new career with Global Industries out of Sulphur, LA in October of 2011.


Joshua was a fun loving man who enjoyed living life to the fullest.

Joshua loved spending time with his family and his many friends.

He seemed to touch all those he met throughout his short life with his loving, caring, and selfless attitude.

Joshua was also a local Spokane hero after putting his life in jeopardy in order to save another local man from being stabbed to death.

Joshua loved being active.

His passion was snowboarding, diving, and playing hockey with his brother, Jonah.

He also loved riding his motorcycle and more recently driving his new Volkswagen GTI.

Joshua will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his mother; Melinda Meier and husband John of Vancouver, BC., his father; Greg Payne of Spokane, WA, his brother Jonah Payne of Spokane and wife Katie, sister Heather Blankenship and husband Heath of Spokane, sister; Holly Shidler and husband Scott of Beaumont, CA, sister; Lisa Payne of Vancouver, BC., step brother Travis Meier and wife Stephanie, of Vancouver, BC., step-brother; Shane Meier of Santa Monica, CA, step-brother; Ashley Meier of Singapore.


The Celebration of Life services for Joshua will be on March 4th at 2pm.

It will be held at the First Assembly Church at 828 West Indiana, Spokane.

The service will be followed by a reception in the fellowship hall of the church.


A Memorial Fund has been set-up to erect a tribute to Joshua at his favorite snowboard mountain - Schweitzer.

This fund is for people to contribute to in lieu of flowers or other gifts.

Any remaining funds will be donated to The Divers Institute of Technology for the Josh Payne Scholarship.
