Rangers win with Callahan’s 100th goal
NHL: Ryan Callahan scored his 100th NHL goal 2:59 into overtime, and the New York Rangers snapped a rare losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
Callahan took a pass from defenseman Ryan McDonagh and broke in alone. He flipped a shot over goalie Ryan Miller’s shoulder for his career-best 24th goal of the season.
• Red Wings drop second straight at home: Just like that, the Detroit Red Wings have a losing streak at home.
After winning 23 straight at Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings have now lost two in a row on home ice, falling 4-3 to the Colorado Avalanche.
• Perron helps Blues top Jets: David Perron scored the winning goal in the shootout to lift the visiting St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
Perron moved in on Chris Mason in the fourth round and roofed a backhander, ruining the Jets’ rally from a two-goal deficit.
• Malkin’s hat trick leads Pens past Lightning: Evgeni Malkin had his ninth career hat trick, Jordan Staal added two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins won for the fifth time in seven games by routing the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.
Purdue tops Michigan for first home loss
Men’s Basketball: Terone Johnson scored a career-high 22 points and Robbie Hummel added 17 to help Purdue upset No. 11 Michigan 75-61, handing the Wolverines their first home loss of the season in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Michigan (21-8, 11-5 Big Ten) entered 15-0 at the Crisler Center but couldn’t finish off the third unbeaten home season in school history. Trey Burke and Zack Novak led the Wolverines with 12 points each, while Tim Hardaway Jr. had 10.
• No. 7 North Carolina beats No. 25 Virginia: Tyler Zeller scored 20 points, including a critical dunk with 13.3 seconds left and the shot clock winding down, and No. 7 North Carolina beat No. 25 Virginia 54-51 in Charlottesville, Va.
John Henson added 15 points, including 11 in the second half.
Harrison Barnes had a poor shooting day for the Tar Heels, missing 12 of 15 shots. He scored seven points.
• Rivers helps No. 5 Duke outlast Virginia Tech: Austin Rivers scored 23 points, Seth Curry added 19 and No. 5 Duke held off Virginia Tech 70-65 in overtime in Durham, N.C.
Miles Plumlee added 15 rebounds and two free throws with 9.6 seconds left for the Blue Devils (25-4, 12-2), who made 6 of 8 foul shots in the final minute of overtime to win their sixth straight and remain atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
• St. John’s squeaks by No. 20 Notre Dame: Moe Harkless had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead St. John’s to a 61-58 victory over No. 20 Notre Dame in New York.
D’Angelo Harrison added 15 points for St. John’s (13-16, 6-10 Big East), while Amir Garrett had 11, including the drive that gave the Red Storm a 61-58 lead with 8.9 seconds to play.
Stanford coach earns 700th school victory
Women’s Basketball: Chiney Ogwumike scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds, older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 15 points and five blocks and No. 2 Stanford beat Utah 69-42 at Stanford, Calif., giving coach Tara Vanderveer her 700th career victory with the Cardinal.
The Hall of Fame coach is fifth on the all-time coaching list with 852 wins.
• Connecticut women rout Marquette: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored a career-high 27 points to lead fourth-ranked Connecticut to an easy 85-45 victory over Marquette in Milwaukee.
The Huskies (26-3, 13-2 Big East) have won all seven meetings against Marquette and will face No. 3 Notre Dame on Monday night to try and earn a share of the conference regular-season title.
Radwanska defeats Goerges, wins Dubai
Tennis: Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland won her eighth career WTA title, defeating Julia Goerges of Germany 7-5, 6-4 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best No. 5 when the world rankings are released Monday.
• Del Potro beats Tsonga: Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina defeated top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-3 in an Open 13 semifinal in Marseille, France.
Del Potro will face 2010 champion Michael Llodra of France, who defeated third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-4, 7-6 (10). • Almagro into Buenos Aires final: Defending champion Nicolas Almagro will meet fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the Copa Claro final. No. 2 seed Almagro defeated Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, and No. 1 Ferrer cruised past local favorite David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Miscellany: Americans Katie Futcher and Angela Stanford and South Korea’s Jenny Shin all shot 1-under-par 71s to stay tied for the lead after three rounds of the $1.4 million HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.
Futcher led almost the entire day, jumping ahead with a birdie on the second hole. But a bogey on 18 – just her second of the tournament – allowed Stanford and Shin to regain a share of the lead at 9-under 207.
• Raich wins World Cup super-G: Austrian veteran Benjamin Raich got his first World Cup victory in more than two years, winning a super-G as prerace favorite Didier Cuche finished third in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
• Women’s World Cup downhill canceled in Bulgaria: A women’s World Cup downhill was canceled because of strong wind and won’t be rescheduled.
The decision to scrub the penultimate women’s downhill of the season was made after the original start time was postponed three times with wind gusting up to 80 mph.
• Lane leads Bassmaster Classic: Chris Lane has a narrow lead after two days of the Bassmaster Classic at Bossier City, La.
Lane of Guntersville, Ala., brought in 19 pounds, 4 ounces of bass on the Red River to run his total to 35 pounds, 8 ounces overall.
• The Factor wins San Carlos Stakes: The Factor, ridden by Martin Garcia, defeated Sway Away by a half-length to win the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his 16th victory in his last 17 races nationally.
• El Padrino wins Risen Star Stakes: Favorite El Padrino edged Mark Valeski in a close finish to win the Grade-2 $300,000 Risen Star Stakes in New Orleans, the final prep for the Louisiana Derby.
