Jones, Nelubowich lead WSU baseball to sweep

With Derek Jones and Adam Nelubowich leading the way, Washington State fashioned a doubleheader sweep of visiting Nebraska-Omaha on Monday at a cold Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Jones was a single away from hitting for the cycle, including his second home run of the season, and drove in three runs in the 7-1 win in the first game that was resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning after being suspended by a snowstorm on Sunday with WSU leading 5-0.

Nelubowich slugged his first home run, good for three runs in a four-run fourth inning that produced a 5-3, second-game win for the Cougars (5-2). .

Softball

Things started well for Whitworth in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader against defending national champion Linfield.

Sami Parr led off the bottom of the first for the Pirates with a double and scored on a Sasha Crow sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

But little went right after that. Linfield (6-0, 4-0 NWC) hit six home runs in a 10-1 win in six innings and 15-2 in five to complete a four-game sweep.

Brittany Wisner had a two-run double for Whitworth (2-8, 0-4) in the bottom of the second inning in the second game.

The games were played in Hermison, Ore., because of snow in Pasco.

Women’s golf

Washington State, led by Kristen Rue, finished third, and Idaho, behind Kayla Mortello, was 10th in the the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.

Rue finished fifth with a 5-under 211. Mortello had a bogey-free 70 in her final round to finish 10th at 215.

Illinois won at 853. WSU had an 866 and Idaho an 885 in the 12-team event.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock added former Humboldt State offensive lineman Riordan Gomez to the roster and activated defensive linemen Jermey Geathers and James Ruffin from the physically unable to perform list.

The team also added DL Brandon Sharpe to the PUP list, placed wide receiver Donte Davis, offensive lineman Isaiah Agson and DL Marcus Adams on reassignment and linebacker Pago Togafau on the other league exempt list so he can join a CFL team.

KIJHL playoffs

Craig Martin scored a hat trick to lead Beaver Valley to a 7-3 win over the Spokane Braves at Eagles Ice-A-Rena for a 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Game 4 is tonight at Eagles at 7.
