Montana will leave Huskies

College football: Washington announced that quarterback Nick Montana, son of Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, has been released from his scholarship so that he can transfer.

Montana (pictured) just completed his redshirt freshman season with the Huskies. The school announced the decision on Monday.

Montana landed at Washington with much fanfare as one of the jewels in coach Steve Sarkisian’s second recruiting class. But Montana was beaten out for the starting role by Keith Price last spring and Price threw for a school-record 33 touchdowns this season.

• Sarkisian has completed the makeover of his defensive coaching staff at Washington by hiring Tosh Lupoi away from California to be the Huskies’ new defensive line coach and defensive run-game coordinator.

Along with his responsibilities as a coach, Lupoi is regarded as a top recruiter on the West Coast.

GU men, women fall out of polls

College basketball: Saint Mary’s managed to knock both the Gonzaga men’s and women’s teams out of the Associated Press Top 25 polls.

Syracuse remains the top-ranked men’s team. Saint Mary’s is No. 24 after beating Gonzaga last Thursday at home, 83-62.

Baylor remains the unanimous No. 1 choice in the women’s poll. Gonzaga fell out after losing to Saint Mary’s at home on Saturday, 66-63.

• Saint Mary’s junior guard Matthew Dellavedova is the WCC Player of the Week after scoring 27 points against San Francisco and 26 against Gonzaga.

Terrence Ross of Washington is the Pac-12 Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 30 points with 14 rebounds against Washington State on Sunday in Seattle.
