In brief: Occupants, dog escape house fire

The Red Cross is providing temporary assistance to two northeast Spokane residents whose home burned Sunday morning.

Heavy smoke was showing from the second floor of a single-family home in the 800 block of East Cascade Place when Spokane firefighters arrived shortly after 7:30 a.m. The occupants of the house and a dog had escaped.

Flames were contained to the second floor and 18 firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour. One female was taken to a hospital for complications of smoke inhalation and later released. Spokane fire officials said the home did not have a working fire detector.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Driver arrested after car hits house

Police arrested a man Sunday evening who crashed his car into a house at the intersection of 31st Avenue and University Road in Spokane Valley, according to KHQ.

Police officials said the driver was southbound on University Road when he tried to pass a car at high speed. The driver lost control, and his vehicle jumped the curb and flipped over before it crashed into a house.

The driver fled the scene, but witnesses followed him and led police to him, according to KHQ. He faces multiple charges, including hit and run, officials said.

Cusick man last seen early Friday

A Cusick, Wash., man is missing, and the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help.

Ray V. Hester, 48, was last seen by a relative around 1 a.m. on Friday. His vehicle was found abandoned Saturday on Highway 211 near Davis Lake. Anyone with possible information on Hester’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s office at (509) 447-3151, ext. 2, or (800) 669-3409.

Hester is described as a white male with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds.

Six injured in shooting at party

SEATTLE – Six people were injured during an early morning shooting at a Seattle house party.

Seattle police said shots were fired just before 2 a.m. Sunday at a home in South Seattle.

Officers are searching for two or more people who may have been connected with the shooting. Police said they were called to the house two times Saturday night before the shots were fired.
