In brief: Jubilee to include barbecue event

CHENEY – The Cheney Jubilee will be held at the Cheney Plaza, located at the corner of Betz Road and State Route 904, on July 14 and July 15, beginning at 10 a.m. each day.

The community event will include a world-class barbecue competition, live music by Herrick, Men in the Making and Electric Bent, a beer garden, the Corvette Club and motorcycle show, the kids pit, a mechanical bull and arts and crafts vendors.

Contenders in the barbecue competition are battling for a $5,000 prize from categories including appetizers, Dutch oven entrees, pork, brisket, chicken and ribs. The winners are qualified to cook at national and world championship events.

Bat expert to speak at Turnbull

CHENEY – The Friends of the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge will have an illustrated presentation “Bats of the World and the Channeled Scablands” by bat experts and wildlife biologists Sandy Rancourt and Mike Rule at 7:30 p.m. July 18 at the refuge, 26010 S. Smith Road.

The event will be followed by a walk to demonstrate special sound detectors to catch bats for identification and examination. Long sleeves, pants and flashlights are recommended. A $5 donation is suggested.
