Make This: DIY Hair Accessory
Myra Calla, creator of accessories shop Twigs & Honey, shares the details for making a sweet bridal hair comb
Want the consummate crowning touch for your bridal ensemble? Hair adornment guru Myra Callan offers everything from exquisite, modern veils and caps to chic headbands, clips and combs on her online store Twigs & Honey (TwigsAndHoney.com); she also has designed exclusive pieces for BHLDN, Anthropolgie’s wedding boutique. But if you’re the crafty type, you may want to hold out for her new accessories how-to book, “Adornments: Sew & Create Accessories with Fabric, Lace & Beads” (Krause Publications, 2012), which hits shelves this September, with photos by famed wedding photographer Elizabeth Messina accompanying each piece.
Here Callan shares the instructions for making this easy lace-and-rhinestone hair comb. With its dainty floral details and subtle sparkle, it would look lovely with a romantic updo.
Lace and Rhinestone Hair Comb
Supplies:
5 to 7 velvet millinery leaves
Small, decorative lace appliqué, from 4 to 6 inches long
20 to 30 small, fatback rhinestones
Jewelry craft glue
1 small comb
Needle and thread
Step 1: Look for a well-embellished lace appliqué at your local fabric store or online. Callan likes options with beading and/or metallic threads for added sparkle and interest.
Step 2: Arrange the velvet millinery leaves under the lace appliqué in any way you’d like, as long as the wired ends are hidden. Etsy is a great resource for leaves in myriad shapes, fabrics and colors.
Step 3: Sew the leaves onto the backside of the lace appliqué, so that they are all secured.
Step 4: Using a good jewelry craft glue, carefully glue the rhinestones - you can use a variety of sizes - onto the velvet leaves in a random array. Let the glue dry.
Step 5: To complete the piece, sew the entire lace-and-leaves section onto the comb. Optional: You can glue a small felt strip over the stitching and wires on the back if you want a more finished look.
