Elected Twelve-time All-Star Joe Sakic was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday in his first year of eligibility, joining Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure and Adam Oates as the newest class of inductees. The induction ceremony will be held Nov. 12. Sakic had 625 goals and 1,016 assists in his 20-year NHL career. Sundin had 564 goals and 785 assists in his 18 seasons. Oates, hired as coach of the Washington Capitals earlier in the day, is sixth on the NHL career assists list with 1,079 and also scored 341 goals in 19 seasons with seven teams. Bure was a six-time All-Star and Calder Trophy winner as the league’s rookie of the year with Vancouver in 1992. He had 437 goals and 342 points in 12 seasons with three teams.

Sentenced Former boxer Christy Martin’s ex-husband was sentenced to 25 years in prison for trying to kill her. James Martin was convicted in April of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and two other counts. Prosecutors say James Martin stabbed his wife in the chest, sliced her in the leg and shot her in the back during a fight in their home in 2010.

Fined New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire was fined $50,000 by the NBA after he tweeted a gay slur. Stoudemire apologized to a fan for using the slur in response to a crude tweet in which the fan admonished the All-Star to “make up for this past season.”

Traded A person with knowledge of the deal tells the Associated Press that the Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to trade the 18th overall pick in the NBA draft to Houston for Chase Budinger, who averaged 9.6 points and 3.7 rebounds.

• The Detroit Pistons traded guard Ben Gordon and a future first-round draft choice to the Charlotte Bobcats for swingman Corey Maggette.

Awarded The NBA awarded the Boston Celtics a 2013 second-round pick of the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a trade disclosure dispute ruling involving Jeff Green, who sat out this season after heart surgery. Boston acquired Green at the 2011 trade deadline in a deal that sent Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City.
