In brief: Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday at mall

SPOKANE VALLEY – Children can think and wonder and wonder and think and come dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character for story time at the Spokane Valley Mall Food Court from 1 to 2 p.m. today, to celebrate the beloved author’s birthday.

The Seussian fun will include cupcakes and a character appearance.

Book and gift fair Wednesday

SPOKANE VALLEY – Good Samaritan Community Center, 17121 E. Eighth Ave., will host Books Are Fun, a book and gift fair, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The event will include items for all ages and proceeds will benefit Leisure Services Activities.

Kevin Daniel to speak at church

MILLWOOD – Kevin Daniel, the executive director for the Inland Northwest Lighthouse for the Blind, will speak at the Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Daniel’s lecture is part of the Culture, Race and Understanding speakers’ series, the community of Millwood’s response to hate incidents in the Inland Northwest. He will talk about knowing from childhood that he would one day lose his vision and how he lived his everyday life without sight. Daniel is a graduate of the Darden School of Business – Business Management Program and a graduate of the Indiana School for the Blind. He currently serves on the Leadership Spokane board of directors and coaches sports for blind athletes.

Inland Northwest Lighthouse employs people who are blind at its Spokane manufacturing center.

Argonne project open house planned

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley will host an open house Wednesday on the Argonne Road corridor construction project scheduled for this summer. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Spokane Valley High School, 2011 N. Hutchinson Road.

Several improvements are scheduled on Argonne between Knox and Trent avenues. A right turn lane will be added on northbound Argonne at Montgomery Avenue. More minor improvements include adding traffic cameras, modifying corners for safer turns by large trucks, upgrading curb ramps and replacing center median signals at Argonne and Knox with overhead signals.

The open house will include information on the timing of construction and potential impacts to the area. Residents are encouraged to attend and give input on the project. Call (509) 720-5010 for more information.
