Bearcats oust No. 2 Orange in Big East

College basketball: Sean Kilpatrick keyed Cincinnati’s early 3-point barrage and scored 18 points as the Bearcats held on for a 71-68 victory over No. 2 Syracuse on Friday night in the semifinals of the Big East men’s basketball tournament in New York.

The fourth-seeded Bearcats (24-9) will meet Louisville in tonight’s championship game at Madison Square Garden.

To get there, they ended the 11-game winning streak of the top-seeded Orange (31-2).

This was Cincinnati’s seventh win over a ranked team this season, the most in the country.

Dion Waiters had 28 points for Syracuse.

• Louisville stomps Notre Dame: Peyton Siva played another near-flawless floor game, Gorgui Dieng scored 16 points and Louisville (25-9) cruised to a 64-50 win over No. 23 Notre Dame (22-11) in New York to reach the Big East tournament championship game for the third time in four years.

• Baylor upsets Kansas: Baylor’s Brady Heslip hit a pair of 3-pointers to keep No. 3 Kansas at bay, and Perry Jones III finished with 18 points as the No. 12 Bears (27-6) rolled to an 81-72 win over the Jayhawks (26-6) in Kansas City, Mo., to reach the Big 12 tournament title game against Missouri.

• Michigan wins in OT: Trey Burke scored a career-high 30 points to help No. 10 Michigan (24-8) rally for a 73-69 overtime win over 10th-seeded Minnesota (19-14) in overtime in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals in Indianapolis. The Wolverines will face archrival Ohio State in today’s semifinal round.

• UMass stuns Temple: Jesse Morgan scored 21 points and Chaz Williams had 20 to lead Massachusetts (22-10) to a 77-71 win over No. 21 Temple (24-7) in Atlantic City, N.J., advancing to the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinals.

The eighth-seeded Minutemen stunned No. 1 seed Temple with a 15-0 run to open the second half and spoil the Owls’ bid for a fourth tournament title in five seasons.

• Griner sparks Baylor women: Brittney Griner had a career-high and tournament-record 45 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots, leading No. 1 Baylor (34-0) to an 86-65 rout of Kansas State (19-13) in the Big 12 tournament semifinals in Kansas City, Mo. The Bears will play Texas A&M in today.

Celtics rout fading Trail Blazers

NBA: Paul Pierce and Ray Allen each scored 22 points and the Boston Celtics romped to a 104-86 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Boston.

Kevin Garnett grabbed seven defensive rebounds to move into second place on the NBA’s career list with defensive rebounds since the league started keeping the stat in 1973-74.

He has 10,122 and moved ahead of Robert Parish (10,117). Karl Malone holds the top spot with 11,406.

• Lakers top Timberwolves: Kobe Bryant scored 34 points and Andrew Bynum added 26 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 105-102 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.

• Cavs snap Thunder’s streak: Antawn Jamison scored 21 points and Kyrie Irving orchestrated a decisive 12-0 run in the final 3 minutes as the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped Oklahoma City’s 14-game home winning streak by beating the Thunder 96-90.

• Bucks top Knicks: Ersan Ilyasova scored 26 points, including a critical putback in the final minute, and the Milwaukee Bucks held on for a 119-114 victory over the New York Knicks in Milwaukee.

Penguins rally for 8th straight victory

NHL: Steve Sullivan scored the tying goal in the third period, and James Neal and Evgeni Malkin connected in the first two rounds of a shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to their eighth straight victory, 2-1 over the Florida Panthers in Pittsburgh.

• Red Wings edge Kings: Darren Helm scored with 1:13 left in regulation, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Detroit.

• Blackhawks defeat Rangers: Defenseman Johnny Oduya scored his first goal for Chicago with 5:56 left in the third period to snap a tie in the Blackhawks’ 4-3 comeback victory over the New York Rangers in Chicago.

Rams trade No. 2 pick in draft to Redskins

NFL: While the Washington Redskins will get what they hope is their quarterback of the future in trading up with the Rams to the No. 2 spot in the draft, the Rams will get a mother lode of draft picks that could get the franchise back on its feet.

The Rams confirmed that they have agreed to trade their No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft to Washington.

In exchange, the Rams get Washington’s first-round pick this year (No. 6 overall), their second-round pick this year plus their first-round picks in 2013 and 2014.

• Manning courtship begins: Free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning met with Denver Broncos president John Elway in Colorado.

The Denver Post cited two NFL sources, and later published pictures of Manning at the Broncos’ training facility on its website.

• Sanchez gets extension: The New York Jets extended quarterback Mark Sanchez’s contract by three years and dropped out of pursuing free agent Peyton Manning.

Sanchez had two years remaining on the deal he signed when the Jets made him a first-round draft pick in 2009,

Watson shoots 62, leads at Doral

Golf: Bubba Watson and Justin Rose put on quite a show of birdies in blustery conditions, until a late eagle from Watson gave him a 10-under-par 62 and a one-shot lead in the Cadillac Championship in Doral, Fla.

Watson and Rose combined for 17 birdies and one eagle. Rose had to settle for a 64. That put him one shot behind Watson, who was at 12-under 132.

• Jones leads by three: Matt Jones shot a 5-under 67 in windy conditions to open a three-stroke lead over George McNeill in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open in Rio Grande.

Spokane pair advance on “Ultimate Fighter”

Miscellany: Spokane’s Mike Chiesa and Sam Sicilia won elimination matches to earn spots on FX’s “The Ultimate Fighter” TV series.

Sicilia knocked out Erin Beach with an overhand right just 8 seconds into his match, while Chiesa used a rear-naked choke hold to force Johnavan Vistante to tap out at 2:05 of the first round.

With their victories, the two earned spots among the final 16 contestants who will be housed under one roof for the 13 weeks of taping.

• Hurd appointed: Jeff Hurd has been appointed the interim commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference after longtime commissioner Karl Benson accepted the same position with the Sun Belt Conference.

• American teen wins ski jumping: American teenager Sarah Hendrickson won the final competition in the World Cup ski jumping season in Trondheim, Norway. Hendrickson had already won the overall title.
