CCS men, women win Bigfoot Invite
Community College of Spokane and North Idaho College divided the individual championships at the Big Foot Invitational golf tournament on Monday at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.
But CCS claimed both the men’s and women’s team titles.
Austin Westphal of NIC was the men’s medalist with two rounds of 69 for a 6-under 138. Dylan Maine (Freeman) of CCS was second at 143.
Women’s medalist was Kelsey Berg of CCS with a 156. Makena Schevenius (Post Falls) of NIC was second at 164.
CCS edged NIC 579-580 for the men’s title while the women had an 18-stroke victory with a 504.
• Washington junior Chris Williams from Moscow, Idaho, was named All-Pac-12 first team in men’s golf for the second straight season after being on the second team as a freshman.
Williams, sixth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, has a scoring average of 70.24, first all-time in UW single-season history.
College baseball
Marco Gonzales, a sophomore at Gonzaga, has been named to the watch list for the 2012 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
The left-handed pitcher/first baseman has a 6-1 record, 1.60 ERA in nine starts and 68 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .197 batting average. At the plate, he is batting .339 with five doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs.
Prep boys golf
Blake Ellingsen of Mead defeated Tanner Comes of Ferris in a playoff to claim medalist honors in the Inland Empire tournament at Spokane Country Club after they matched 1-over-par 73s.
Nick Thurston of Mt. Spokane highlighted the day with a hole-in-one on the 180-yard 13th hole with a 6 iron.
Richland’s 307 earned the team championship by seven strokes over Mead and Mt. Spokane.
