Surgery New York Knicks guard Baron Davis has torn the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee, a potentially career-threatening injury for the 33-year-old. The Knicks said Davis will have surgery this week and is expected to be out a year. An MRI also revealed a partial tear of the patella tendon. Davis was hurt Sunday in the Knicks’ 89-87 victory over Miami.

Resigned Big East Commissioner John Marinatto has resigned after less than three years in the position. The Big East lost several high-profile members under his watch. Former Miami Dolphins CEO Joseph A. Bailey III will serve as interim commissioner. Pittsburgh and Syracuse made plans to leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference in September, and West Virginia bolted for the Big 12 the following month.

Out After three years as general manager of the Denver Broncos, Brian Xanders is out in that role with a year left on his contract following a meeting with Broncos boss John Elway. Elway said in a statement that Xanders’ “hard work and dedication played a major role in the recent success of our team, most notably last season’s division title and playoff win.”

• The Minnesota Vikings released 16-year veteran kicker Ryan Longwell. The surprising move came a little more than a week after the team drafted Georgia kicker Blair Walsh in the sixth round. Longwell signed a four-year contract last summer that called for a $1.75 million salary this season.

Signed The New England Patriots have re-signed receiver Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney has played 10 NFL seasons, three of them with the Patriots from 2006-08. He has also played for Houston, Denver and Washington.

• The Baltimore Ravens have signed defensive tackle Ryan McBean, who will sit out the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Denver withdrew his $1.272 million restricted free agent tender following his suspension, making McBean a free agent.

Suspended Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux was suspended by the NHL for his illegal check to the head on New Jersey center Dainius Zubrus in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The punishment leaves the Flyers without their All-Star forward and leading scorer as they try and rally from a 3-1 deficit in the series.

Extension Arena Football League Commissioner Jerry Kurz has received a five-year contract extension. The league’s board of directors unanimously voted the extension. Kurz has been the league’s commissioner since 2010 and has been involved with the sport for 26 years.
