Riverside levy survives recount

Voters in the Riverside School District have approved a levy that will raise about $2.9 million a year. The measure was approved in an April 18 election, but results were close and Chattoroy resident Leonard Terzenbach paid to have ballots recounted by hand. The recount was completed Tuesday afternoon. The final tally, which includes ballots from Spokane and Pend Oreille counties, was 2,161 votes in favor and 2,150 votes opposed. Those numbers did not change from the original count. Terzenbach paid $1,083 for the recount. That’s based on 25 cents a ballot, said Spokane County Elections Manager Mike McLaughlin. He said once all the expenses of the recount are finalized, Terzenbach likely will get a small refund. The April vote was the second time the district asked voters to approve a levy this year. If it had failed, the district would have had to wait until next year before proposing another one. It will cost property owners about $3.42 per $1,000 assessed value.
