CdA, Lewiston baseball will meet for state consolation

It took some extra innings, but the Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston baseball teams found a way to squeeze in one last game against one another this season.

Bubba Duran struck out four in an eight-inning complete game, and was 4 for 4, including an RBI and a pair of runs, as Coeur d’Alene beat Idaho Falls 7-6 on Friday in the consolation bracket at the Idaho 5A state tournament in Boise.

The Vikings will face Lewiston, which advanced by beating Highland 6-5 in 10 innings, for the consolation championship this morning.

Zach Tibbits was 2 for 4 and drove in three runs for the Bengals.

Idaho 4A state

Bonneville 8, Lakeland 5: The Hawks were eliminated after their second straight loss in the tournament at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

Idaho 3A state

Fruitland 13, St. Maries 1: The Lumberjacks fell in the semifinals and will play Snake River today for third place at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.

Payette 15, Timberlake 5: The Tigers lost their second straight game and were eliminated from the tournament.

Tennis

Lewiston’s Rafa Hewett won both of his matches on the opening day of the Idaho 5A state tournament in Boise to advance to today’s boys singles semifinals against Boise’s Matt Oddonetto.

Lake City’s Luke Ness and Matt Finney also won in straight sets to advance to the semifinals in boys doubles.

In girls play, Coeur d’Alene’s Caitlin McHugh will face Lewiston’s Elsa Hansen in consolation play. The winner will be in the mix for a third-place trophy.

At the Idaho 3A state tournament in Caldwell, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy’s Mindi Grantham lost her first girls singles match and will try and work her way through the consolation bracket to play for third.

Track and field

Ethan Cabbage won the high jump and triple jump to lead the Colville boys to a first-place team finish at the 1A regional meet in Cashmere.

Cabbage finished with a mark of 44 feet, 3 3/4 inches in the triple jump and 6-1 3/4 in the high jump.

Newport’s Jake Wiley finished first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races with respective times of 11.22 seconds, 22.47 and 50.57.

Colville (91), Freeman (84) and Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls (77) were the top three boys teams, respectively.

In the girls meet, Riverside’s Jess Mildes won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 with respective times of 2:21.49, 5:15.19 and 11:19.07.

Newport’s Arielle Walden won the long jump (16-8 3/4) and triple jump (35-6 3/4).

The Cashmere girls finished first as a team with 116 points in front of Lakeside (97.33) and Riverside (91) and Colville (91).

District 9 2B: Asotin’s Cheyenne Loop won the 100 and Kayla Loop and Piper Loop were first and second in the shot put, respectively, as the Asotin girls finished first at the meet in Walla Walla.

The Asotin boys finished second behind Waitsburg-Prescott as Nate Dalton and Michael Martinez were first and second in the 800, respectively.

St. John-Endicott’s Darcy Stamper won the boys high jump.
