Obituary: Van Dewerker, Martha M.

VAN DEWERKER, Martha M.

Martha Van Dewerker’s life was well rounded, decreed by her choice of occupation, residency, interests, family and later, retirement.

After marriage and arrival of three sons, Martha moved to Spokane from Seattle and was employed as office manager for an insurance firm.

The next phase in Martha’s well organized life was a March 17 marriage to John Van Dewerker, an older man with two high school age children who did not join the Van family.
Several years of work, local travel and paying close attention to “nest egg” accumulation paid off.

Her boys joined Navy, Army and Air Force units for long terms.

After retiring, Martha and John traveled widely by car in Europe as well as several cruises.

The final phase in Martha’s life came while residing in rental units where the dread dementia disease, Alzheimer’s, stole her mind.

It was there, after years of care, a fall and surgery took her life at 86 on Mother’s Day, 2012.
