CC Spokane sweeps NWAACC track

Community Colleges of Spokane’s track and field teams dominated the NWAACC Championships, which concluded Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Sasquatch women won their ninth consecutive title, while the men won their eighth straight. CCS’ Jason Cash was voted Men’s Coach of the Year.

CCS athletes dominated the individual titles and awards as well. Shayle Dezellem was the high point winner for the women with 43 points, winning the award for the second time, and Brent Arceneaux scored 28 points to share the men’s high point winner title with Elias Gedyon of Lane. Mikel Elliott was Women’s Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet.

College baseball

Whitworth’s Tyler Pfeffer was named a first-team All-American by D3baseball.com, the first Pirate to earn the honor in 47 years.

Pfeffer, a sophomore out of Shadle Park High, is Whitworth’s first first-team All-American in baseball since Dick Washburn was named one by the NAIA in 1965.

Pfeffer is batting .377 and led the Northwest Conference in home runs (12), doubles (19), RBIs (58) and runs scored (46).

• Collin Slaybaugh singled to drive in Tommy Richards in the 10th inning for the only run of the game as Washington State beat Gonzaga 1-0 in nonconference action in Pullman.

The Bulldogs (32-21) finish their regular season with a three-game series against BYU in Provo, Utah, starting Thursday, while the Cougars (27-26) close their season with a three-game set against Washington in Seattle beginning Friday.

Arena football

Defensive back Terrance Sanders of the Spokane Shock was named the Arena Football League’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week.

Sanders had a franchise-record three interceptions in the Shock’s 65-47 win over Philadelphia and set a team record for interceptions in a season with eight.
