Midnight fire damages apartment complex

Nobody was hurt in a fire this morning that caused smoke damage to the Wedgewood Park Apartments, located at 202 E. Wedgewood Ave., in north Spokane. Spokane Fire crews responded just after midnight and found smoke showing from a block away and from the ground floor of the three-story, eight-unit building. Firefighters tackled the fire from the front door while others searched the building for occupants, a news release said. Additional crews were called in because lives were potentially threatened in the building and a neighboring eight-unit building. Apartment occupants were displaced for the night and assisted by Red Cross. Fire investigators continue to search for the fire’s cause. The building sustained about $45,000 worth of damage with significant damage to the apartment where the fire started on the first floor. There was also smoke damage to two units directly above the apartment.
