Erik Meyer returning as quarterback for Spokane Shock

Arena football: Erik Meyer, the 2013 Arena Football League MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, has signed a one-year contract to return to the Spokane Shock.

Meyer passed for 4,667 yards and 112 touchdowns last season, leading the Shock to a 15-5 record. Spokane lost to Arizona in the National Conference championship game.

Meyer led the AFL in touchdowns (127 passing/rushing), passer rating (123.6) and completion percentage (68.2). The former Eastern Washington Eagle opened the season with an AFL-record streak of 193 passes without an interception.

Meyer joined Central Washington University’s staff for the 2013 season as quarterbacks coach.

Spokane also announced the signing of former Idaho Vandals offensive lineman Matt Cleveland and ex-West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown.

Little movement in polls for Zags

Men’s College basketball: Gonzaga’s 2-0 week resulted in a minor move in the rankings.

The Bulldogs (10-1), winners of six straight, dropped from 20th to 21st in the AP Top 25. They climbed from a tie for 16th to a tie for 15th with Baylor in the USA Today rankings.

Saint Mary’s (8-0) was third in receiving votes in both polls.

Chiefs’ Aviani player of week

Junior hockey: Spokane Chiefs forward Mike Aviani has been named the WHL Player of the Week for his three goals and five assists for eight points along with a +4 rating in three games last week, helping the Chiefs to three straight victories.

On Wednesday, Aviani scored the game-winning goal on the power play and added an assist to help the Chiefs post a 5-3 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips.

Aviani ranks second in the WHL in goals with 26 and sixth in points with 50 in 35 games this season.

WAC honors Idaho’s Hill

Men’s College basketball: Idaho’s Connor Hill has been named Western Athletic Conference Men’s Player of the Week.

Hill, a junior guard from Post Falls, had back-to-back 20-plus point performances as Idaho went 1-1 in road games at Montana and Portland State.
