Signed Former Tampa Bay designated hitter Luke Scott signed a $300,000, one-year contract with SK Wyvern in South Korea’s baseball league on Friday. Scott batted .241 for the Rays last season with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 91 games.
Suspended Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Troy Patton was suspended by Major League Baseball for the first 25 games of next season after a second positive test for amphetamines. Patton was 2-0 with a 3.70 ERA last season in 56 relief appearances.
Hired James Madison hired Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers as its football coach. The 26-year coaching veteran spent the past two years with the Buckeyes.
Agreed The Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan’s Pacific League agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract with Kevin Youkilis. Youkilis spent last season with the New York Yankees, where he struggled with numerous injuries and hit just .219 with two homers and eight RBIs.
• The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a two-year, $10.5 million contract with reliever Brad Ziegler. He was 8-1 with a 2.22 ERA and had a career-high 13 last season for Arizona. The D-backs also agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with third baseman Eric Chavez.
Dropped Prosecutors are dropping a misdemeanor assault charge against Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov. The charge stemmed from an Oct. 30 incident with his girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyukat. The case was dropped after new information surfaced from additional interviews with witnesses. Varlamov, 25, has been free on bond. He could have faced up to two years in jail if convicted.
Retired Former Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina retired from the NHL. Kubina had 110 goals and 276 assists in 13 seasons.
Arrested Former Phoenix Suns player Richard Dumas was arrested on eight counts of organized retail theft.
