Stanwood family of 4 dies in canal crash
A family of four from Stanwood, Wash., north of Everett, died Sunday when their car crashed into a flowing irrigation canal and submerged near George, Wash.
Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison released the names of the family this morning. They are Dioselina Buenrostro, 33, a female, and Gabriel Ochoa, 35, a male; and two girls, Yesenia “Jessie” Ochoa, 4, and Sandra Ochoa, 9.
The accident happened Sunday morning near the Gorge Amphitheatre, at the intersection of County Road 1 Northwest and Beverly-Burke Road.
The family’s SUV collided with a compact hatchback at the intersection, then struck a guardrail and plunged into the canal. The SUV submerged and was pulled with the current about 100 yards downstream.
Rescuers removed all four occupants. The adults were dead at the scene and the girls died at Quincy Valley Medical Center, said Kyle Foreman, spokesman for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
The coroner’s office will conduct autopsies on the victims and release causes and manners of death later.
