Portland defeats Idaho

PORTLAND, Ore. — Thomas van Der Mars scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Portland past Idaho 88-74 on Thursday night. The game was part of a round-robin Coaches versus Cancer Tournament with Columbia and North Texas. Van Der Mars notched his third career double-double and first of the season as he led the balanced Pilots (2-2) who had five players reach double figures. Alec Wintering added 14 points — most from the foul line on 10-11 free-throw shooting — Ryan Nicholas added 12 points, Riley Barker and Bryce Pressley 10 each. Barker was a defensive force in a 3:30 span of the first half, blocking four shots, grabbing three defensive rebounds and making a steal. Idaho was whistled for 25 fouls and Portland converted 31 of 38 free throws. Stephen Madison scored a game-high 19 for Idaho (2-2).
