Feedback

Readers responded enthusiastically to Spokane retailers who declined to open on Thanksgiving Day, especially this quote from Bruce Barany, president of the family-owned General Store in north Spokane.

“The box stores can have it. We believe Thanksgiving belongs to families. Working on that day is like missing church. You don’t do it.”

 Here’s a sampling of responses:

Those of us … have no choice but to work. I personally have no problem with it, considering we get paid double time and a half… Along with every other major holiday!

Jessica, I understand that in some jobs – nurses, for instance (my mom worked at Sacred Heart for almost 40 years) – but if you’re out shopping and not spending time with your family, that’s as sad as being forced to work and NOT being able to spend time with your loved ones, IMHO.

Good man!

Good for them. I think it is ridiculous these stores are opening earlier and earlier. Family is important. When you are away a lot or lose those you care about you learn to really value what is important. It isn’t shopping.

Good for them! Thanksgiving is a family day and I think the whole Black Friday thing has gotten out of hand too. I would rather spend both days with my family.

I shop/support Small Business Saturday. Keep retail money in our local economy. Better service and friendlier environment. I always find gifts for everyone on my list without going to the big box stores.

Ahem…Starbucks on Christmas: are you listening?!
