U.S. takes Walker Cup lead

Golf: NCAA champion Max Homa beat Max Orrin 5 and 3 and the United States won the first six singles matches Saturday in the Walker Cup to take an 8-4 lead over Britain and Ireland at historic National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.

Homa won the par-4 14th with a par and finished off the Englishman with a birdie win on the par-4 15th.

The biennial amateur event, first played in 1922 at National Golf Links, will close today with four morning foursomes matches and 10 afternoon singles matches.

• Peterson, Svoboda share Chiquita lead: John Peterson and Andrew Svoboda shared the third-round lead in the Chiquita Classic in Davidson, N.C., the second of four tournaments in the Web.com Tour Finals series.

Peterson had five back-nine birdies to shoot 5-under 67 to match Svoboda at 10-under 206 at River Run. Svoboda birdied the final two holes for a 69.

• Langer grabs three-stroke lead: Bernhard Langer shot a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke lead in the Champions Tour’s Montreal Championship in Sainte-Julie, Quebec.

Langer had five birdies in a bogey-free second round to reach 6 under.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett improved on his first-round total by 10 strokes, shooting a 5-under 67 for an even-par after two rounds.

• Lee takes lead at European Masters: Scotland’s Craig Lee shot a 10-under 61 to take a two-stroke lead after the third round of the European Masters in Crans-Sur-Sierre, Switzerland.

Burns retains WBO lightweight title

Boxing: Ricky Burns withstood a suspected broken jaw and being knocked down by Mexican challenger Raymundo Beltran to retain the WBO lightweight title following a controversial draw.

Burns never looked like he had the advantage and even he and his hometown fans in Glasgow, Scotland, were surprised when the result was announced. One judge gave it to Burns 115-112, another ruled Beltran won by 115-113, and the last scored it 114-114.

Mexico fires Chepo after Honduras loss

Soccer: In the wake of an embarrassing 2-1 home loss against Honduras at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca on Friday, Jose Manuel De la Torre has been fired as the manager of Mexico and will be replaced by Luis Fernando Tena, the coach who led Mexico to an Olympic gold medal in London.

Blue Jays’ Cabrera has tumor removed

Miscellany: Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera has had a benign tumor removed from his spine.

Cabrera, who had the surgery on Aug. 30, hasn’t played since Aug. 1 after a undergoing a season-ending ankle injury. The team expects him to be ready for spring training.

• Hull rejoins Blues’ organization: Hall-of-Famer Brett Hull, the St. Louis Blues’ career leading scorer, is rejoining the NHL organization in the front office.

The 49-year Hull set several team records in 11 seasons with St. Louis, with five 50-goal seasons, including a franchise-record 86 in 1990-91.
