Tanielu an All-Star

Baseball: Former Washington State infielder Nick Tanielu has been named to the 2014 New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

The 2014 MLB draft pick will represent the Tri-City ValleyCats, the Short Season A affiliate of the Houston Astros, and the North Division in the event Aug. 19 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Tanielu is batting .306 with 14 extra-base hits and 34 RBIs. He finished his Washington State career with a .364 batting average.

Chiefs to play at EWU

Hockey: The Spokane Chiefs announced today that their only home preseason game, scheduled for Thursday, September 11, will return to Eastern Washington University’s University Recreation Center (URC). The Chiefs will host the Tri-City Americans in Cheney for the second consecutive year, with official game time scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale Aug. 21, as the Chiefs’ Annual Fall Camp begins at the Spokane Arena.

Woods a Ryder possibility

Golf: U.S. captain Tom Watson says he would be foolish not to consider Tiger Woods as one of his wild-card selections for the Ryder Cup.

Woods missed the cut by five shots at the PGA Championship, just five days after he withdrew from a World Golf Championship because of a sore back. Woods missed three months recovering from March 31 back surgery.

Watson doesn’t make his three captain’s picks for three more weeks.
