Three legends set for state HOF

Three sports legends with local ties will be inducted Thursday into the Washington Sports Hall of Fame during the Rutgers football game against Washington State in Seattle.

The inductees are Indianapolis 500 winner Tom Sneva of Spokane; former Cougar quarterback Jack Thompson; and longtime ABC-TV sportscaster Keith Jackson, who got his start broadcasting in Pullman.

In addition to winning the 1983 Indianapolis 500, Sneva won the Indy car season championships in 1977 and 1978. He attended both Lewis and Clark High School and Eastern Washington.

Thompson, who was nicknamed the “Throwin’ Samoan” by late Spokesman-Review columnist Harry Missildine, threw for 7,818 yards and was taken third overall in the 1979 draft. He played six seasons in the NFL.

Soccer

The Washington State Cougars women and the 17th-ranked Brigham Young Cougars played to a 0-0 tie on Monday in Provo, Utah.

Senior goalkeeper Gurveen Clair made nine saves to keep the WSU Cougars’ shutout streak going.

WSU has posted a school record-tying five straight shutouts dating to last season. The Cougs haven’t allowed a goal in a school-record 562 minutes, 47 seconds.

WSU will host Montana on Sunday at noon. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.

• Mario Zarate had a hat trick and Kazuki Tateishi added a goal to spark the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch men to a 4-2 victory over host Shoreline in a nonconference season opener.

Volleyball

Gonzaga Bulldogs junior outside hitter Savannah Blinn was named to the All-West Coast Conference preseason team as voted on by the 10 conference coaches.

Gonzaga, as a team, was picked to finish eighth. BYU was the clearcut favorite to win the WCC, receiving nine of 10 first-place votes. San Diego had the other first-place vote and was picked to place second.

All 10 WCC teams open the season this Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Challenge hosted by Boise State. The Bulldogs will open against the host Broncos on Friday.
