No. 12 Terps edge Spartans in 2 overtimes

College men: Dez Wells scored 16 points, including a tying 3 with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, and No. 12 Maryland earned a 68-66 double-overtime win over Michigan State (9-5) at East Lansing, Michigan, in the Terrapins’ first Big Ten game.

Melo Trimble, just 2 for 13 from the field, added 15 points for Maryland (13-1).

Iowa upsets Ohio State: Jarrod Uthoff scored 18 points and Aaron White added 17 to lead Iowa (10-4) past No. 20 Ohio State (11-3) 71-65 in the Big Ten opener at Columbus, Ohio.

No. 3 Virginia turns back Davidson: Justin Anderson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel a 12-3 run in the second half and No. 3 Virginia (12-0) pulled away to beat stubborn Davidson (9-2) 83-72 at Charlottesville, Virginia.

Louisville downs Long Beach State: Terry Rozier scored 23 points, Montrezl Harrell added 16 and No. 5 Louisville (12-1) beat Long Beach State (5-10) 63-48 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Freshman powers Kansas: Freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20 points and Perry Ellis added 15 to help No. 13 Kansas (10-2) beat Kent State (8-4) 78-62 at Lawrence, Kansas.

Florida State wins on Florida’s own-goal basket: Florida forward Jacob Kurtz accidentally tipped in a Devon Bookert miss with 0.4 seconds left to give Florida State a 65-63 win against its instate rival at Tallahassee, Florida. The victory snapped a Gators’ five-game win streak in the series dating back to 2008.

Blazers rally to down Raptors in overtime

NBA: Damian Lillard had 26 points and nine assists and Portland rallied to beat visiting Toronto 102-97 in overtime.

LaMarcus Aldridge, who returned after missing three of the last four games because of an upper respiratory illness, had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers, who won their fourth straight. The Blazers rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing by 13 points.

James sits as Hawks defeat Cavaliers: Paul Millsap took over for Atlanta in the fourth quarter to help hold off a Cleveland comeback and the Hawks beat the visiting Cavaliers, who were without LeBron James, 109-101.

James, celebrating his 30th birthday, was held out with a sore left knee.

Suns’ winning streak ends at six: Tyreke Evans scored 24 points, including eight straight for New Orleans in the final 2 minutes, and the Pelicans held off visiting Phoenix 110-106 to stop the Suns’ winning streak at six games.

Lopez helps Nets cool off Bulls: Brook Lopez had a season-high 29 points, Joe Johnson had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and visiting Brooklyn posted a 96-82 victory to snap Chicago’s seven-game winning streak.

Bryant has triple-double for Lakers: Kobe Bryant had 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for his 21st career triple-double, and the visiting Los Angeles Lakers held off Denver 111-103 to end a three-game losing streak.

Jazz win, but Burks out for year: Gordon Hayward scored 11 of his 26 points in the final four minutes to help Utah rally to beat Minnesota 100-94 at Salt Lake City.

Before the game, it was announced that starting guard Alec Burks would have shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Warriors belt 76ers: Marreese Speights scored 23 points, Stephen Curry added 13 points and nine assists, and Golden State beat Philadelphia 126-86 at Oakland, California.

Hornets’ Jefferson injured: Charlotte center Al Jefferson is scheduled to have an MRI exam on his injured groin.

Tokarski sharp in Montreal’s win

NHL: Former Spokane Chiefs goalie Dustin Tokarski had 36 saves and Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau scored the winning shootout goal to lift Montreal over Florida 2-1 at Sunrise, Florida.

Oilers snap losing streak: David Perron’s shootout goal snapped Edmonton’s nine-game losing streak in a 3-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup-champion Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton, Alberta.

Canucks end road skid: Jannik Hansen scored in the second period, immediately after leaving the penalty box for an illegal hit to the head, and Vancouver snapped a four-game road losing streak by beating San Jose 3-1 at San Jose, California.

No. 23 Seton Hall off to best start in history

College women: Daisha Simmons had 19 points and seven steals to lead No. 23 Seton Hall past Butler 70-65 at South Orange, New Jersey.

With the victory, Seton Hall (13-1, 2-0 Big East) earned its best start in program history.

Zelalem ready to join U.S. national team

Soccer: Promising young midfielder Gedion Zelalem has obtained his U.S. citizenship and the process is underway for him to join the U.S. men’s national team.

Zelalem made his Champions League debut with Arsenal earlier this month. The 17-year-old, who had played as a youth for Germany, was able to become a citizen after his father obtained U.S. citizenship.

Howard sidelined: Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a calf injury.

The 35-year-old United States international initially missed Sunday’s loss at Newcastle, England.
