In brief: Former Chief Tyler Johnson nets first hat trick

NHL: Former Spokane Chiefs standout Tyler Johnson scored three goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.

With the Lightning leading 3-2, Johnson doubled the advantage with 5:22 remaining and then completed his first career hat trick less than 2 1/2 minutes later. The rookie center has 16 goals this season.

• Blues top Isles in SO: Kevin Shattenkirk and Alexander Steen scored shootout goals to lift the St. Louis Blues to 4-3 win over the New York Islanders in Uniondale, N.Y., following a puzzling goal reversal call in OT.

Thomas Vanek appeared to score the winner for the Islanders on the power play with 1:15 left in overtime but the play was overturned on review.

• Ducks enjoy outdoors, blank Kings: Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey scored first-period goals, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 at Dodger Stadium in the NHL’s first warm-weather outdoor game.

Jonas Hiller made 36 saves in his 20th career shutout as the league-leading Ducks dominated the landmark meeting of Southern California’s two hockey teams under the stars in Chavez Ravine. Andrew Cogliano added an empty-net goal with 1:29 left.

• Leafs beat Jets in OT: Dustin Byfuglien fired a low shot past goalie Jonathan Bernier 2:44 into overtime to give the Jets a 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Maze captures first downhill win of season

Winter sports: Defending overall World Cup champion Tina Maze won a downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, for her first victory of what had so far been a difficult season.

Regaining her form just in time for the Olympics, the Slovenian clocked 1 minute, 37.79 seconds.

Switzerland’s Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden finished second, 0.27 seconds behind, and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was third, 0.38 back.

• Reichelt ends Austrian drought at Hahnenkamm : Hannes Reichelt became the first Austrian winner of the classic Hahnenkamm downhill in eight years, beating Aksel Lund Svindal and Bode Miller.

Reichelt mastered the 3.5-kilometer Streif course in Kitzbuehel, Austria, in 2 minutes, 3.38 seconds. Overall World Cup leader Svindal trailed by 0.21 in second, and Miller came 0.34 behind to claim his first downhill podium in almost two years.

• Holcomb claims two-man bobsled title: Steven Holcomb of the U.S. teamed with Curt Tomasevicz for a seventh-place finish in Konigssee, Germany, more than enough to earn his second World Cup overall two-man championship.

Canada’s Justin Kripps got his first World Cup race victory, teaming with brakeman Bryan Barnett to post a two-run time of 1 minute, 39.71 seconds. Switzerland’s Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann were second, 0.15 seconds back. Lyndon Rush and Lascelles Brown took third for Canada, 0.32 behind.

Woodland leads; Woods misses cut

Golf: Gary Woodland didn’t have to overpower the par 5s to take the lead at Torrey Pines.

Woodland found his five birdies elsewhere on another tough day of scoring on the South Course for a 2-under-par 70, giving him an 8-under 208 and a one-shot lead over 20-year-old Jordan Spieth and Marc Leishman of Australia going into the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Defending champion Tiger Woods, an eight-time winner at Torrey Pines, went seven straight holes making bogey or worse on his way to a 79. That not only matched his highest score on American soil, he failed to make the 54-hole cut.

Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) shot a 72, giving him a 1-under 215 after three rounds.

Choi tops leaderboard at Bahamas: Na Yeon Choi shot a 7-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the season-opening Bahamas LPGA Classic, chipping to a foot to set up a birdie on the par-5 18th hole at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

• Garcia takes Qatar Masters title: Sergio Garcia won the Qatar Masters for his 11th European Tour title, beating Mikko Ilonen with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff in Doha, Qatar. Garcia closed with a 7-under 65 to match Ilonen at 16-under 272.

Ross matches Raptors’ mark in loss to Clips

NBA: Jamal Crawford had a season-high 37 points and 11 assists, and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers overcame Terrence Ross’ 51 points to beat the Toronto Raptors 126-118.

Ross, a former UW star, matched Vince Carter’s franchise record set 14 years ago and nearly doubled his previous career high of 26 points. The second-year guard connected on 16 of 29 field-goal attempts, made 10 of 17 from 3-point range and went 9 for 10 at the free-throw line.

• Durant posts triple-double in return: Kevin Durant had 32 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder to their seventh straight win, a 103-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Durant missed the Thunder’s win over Boston on Friday with a sprained right shoulder.

Bentley coach joins 900-win club

Women’s basketball: Bentley University coach Barbara Stevens became the sixth coach in women’s college basketball history to record 900 victories as her undefeated Falcons posted a 98-80 Division II win over Saint Anselm in Waltham, Mass.,

Stevens, 58, who also coached at Clark University and the University of Massachusetts, holds the Division II record for wins with 743 over 37 years.

• Chatanooga’s Foster earns 800th win: Chattanooga’s Jim Foster earned his 800th career victory as his Lady Mocs defeated Samford 63-50 in Chatanooga, Tenn.

Foster improved his record to 800-310 in a 36-year career that also has included stops at St. Joseph’s, Vanderbilt and Ohio St.

Miscellany: Former lightweight champion Benson Henderson won a disputed split decision over Josh Thomson in a lightweight fight at UFC Chicago.

Henderson (20-3) received winning scores of 48-47 and 49-46, and the other judge scored it 48-47 for Thomson (20-6).

• Garcia outpoints Burgos: Mikey Garcia retained the WBO junior lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Burgos in New York.
