Shadow coach to help Bulldogs

Spokane Shadow coach Chad Brown will join the Gonzaga women’s soccer team as a volunteer coach.

Brown, who attended Central Valley HS, coached the Shadow to a title in the Evergreen Premier League in their first year of competition after a nine-year hiatus.

Brown attended Fresno State and also played his last two years of collegiate soccer with Gonzaga in 1997-98.

He also serves with the Shadow as the U8-10 director and the U12 girls and U11 boys head coach.

Basketball

Three Eastern Washington players were among hundreds who were honored on the 2013-14 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, which honors athletes who excelled academically.

Guards Tyler Harvey and Daniel Hill, and forward Martin Seiferth were named to the honors court.

Harvey, a junior, led the Big Sky in scoring with 21.8 points a game. Hill, also a junior, played in 17 games as a backup point guard. Seiferth set the school record for shooting percentage with .644. He announced plans to play professionally in Germany and is scheduled to receive his bachelor’s degree this summer.

• Three Whitworth men’s players have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court while the Pirates as a team picked up an NABC Team Academic Excellence award.

Graduated seniors Colton McCargar and Dustin McConnell, along with rising senior Taylor Farnsworth, were named to the Honors Court, according to a news release.

Golf

Gonzaga University’s Brendan Connolly shot a 72-hole score of 285 to finish tied for 40th in the 48th Pacific Coast Amateur men’s golf tournament at Pine Canyon Club in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Friday.

Cory Pereira shot a 261 with rounds of 70-62-62-67 for an eight-stroke victory.

Swimming

The Whitworth women’s team led all of NCAA Division III in cumulative GPA for the second consecutive semester.

The men’s team also earned the Scholar All-America Team Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association.

Wes Tatum and Wes Walton both were named to the first-team Scholar All-America team.

Eight other Pirates received honorable mention recognition for the spring of 2014.  Callum MacKintosh and Kyle Wicks were honored from the men’s team. Jerusha Dressel, Kate Duvall, Bridget Louis, Hannah Norris, Samantha Smith and Alisa Stang received the honor on the women’s team.

Track and field

Ten members of the Whitworth program earned all-academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Christina Dobbins, Dakota Kliamovich, Kierstie Shellman and Cassidy Stevick received the honor on the women’s team.

Stephen Cooper, Tyler Coopman, Peter Delap, Joe Green, Jonathan Hoff and Casey Monahan received the honor on the men’s team.

Tennis

WSU has hired Jeff Beaman as associate head women’s tennis coach. Beaman comes to Pullman after having served eight years as both the men’s and women’s coach at Idaho.

• The Whitworth men’s tennis team as a whole and eight individual players received academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Dustin McConnell and John Talbot earned ITA scholar status for the fourth consecutive year.

Also making the list were Drew Adams of Clarkston, Drew Brigham, Chris Engelmann, Matt Goebel, Blake Miller of Missoula, and Troy Patterson.

• Six members of the Whitworth women’s tennis team recently were named as scholar athletes from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Calyee Lamm of Spokane Valley, K.C. McConnell of Clarkston, Morgan McDivitt, Saryn Mooney, Talyor Pena, and Ashley Winslow all received the scholar athlete recognition.

The Pirates team also earned the ITA All-Academic Team award.
