Several athletes picked to all-academic teams
Several area athletes, three of them at Whitworth, have been selected to 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District men’s and women’s track and field/cross country teams as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
Whitworth seniors Jonathan Hoff and Peter Delap are on the District 8 men’s Division III team and sophomore Dakota Kliamovich on the women’s.
Hoff, from Napa, California, and an All-District repeater, had a 3.93 GPA through January and graduated with a degree in engineering physics; Delap, from Portland, had a 3.84 GPA and graduated with a degree in marketing; and Kliamovich, from Central Valley who transferred from Cornell, a 4.0 GPA in biology and psychology.
Idaho had two women selected to the District 7 Division I team, seniors Alycia Butterworth from Parksville, British Columbia, with a 3.91 GPA in marketing, and Hannah Kiser, from Wenatchee, an All-District repeater and 2012 Capital One Academic All-American, with a 3.94 GPA in biochemistry.
Washington State senior Ruby Roberts, from Kingston, Washington, who has completed her fine arts degree with a 3.97 GPA, and Kinsey Gomez, an Oregon State junior from Coeur d’ Alene High School with a 3.84 GPA in marketing, were named to the District 8 Division I women’s team.
The District 8 Division I men’s team included A.J. Maricich, a Washington senior from Mead with a 3.43 GPA in geography.
Kadie Booth, an Eastern Oregon senior from Post Falls, was selected to the District 4 College Division women’s team with a 3.48 GPA in multidiscipline studies and elementary education.
Basketball
The Spokane Stars eighth-grade girls team won a national title at the 2014 Reno Memorial Day West Coast championships in the elite division last weekend, defeating the Stockton, California, Mustangs 41-35 in the championship game.
The team coached by Ron Adams went unbeaten, winning its Spokane city league AAU title with a 12-0 record; won a state title; and went 5-0 in Reno to finish 25-0 overall.
Team members: Camryn Skaife, Sacajawea Middle School; Quincy McDeid, Salk; Lexie Hull, Lacie Hull, Hailey Christopher, Kate Sams and Mady Simmelink, all Greenacres; Michaela Laabs, Horizon; and Megan Solinksy, Carmichael Middle School of Richland. Lacie Hull had 12 points and six rebounds, Lexie Hull had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Simmelink and Christopher each had four rebounds and three assists in the title game.
College scene
Washington State senior outfielder Collin Slaybaugh was named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America second team for Division I baseball.
Slaybaugh, from Puyallup, Washington, owns a 4.00 GPA as a movement studies major.
• Community Colleges of Spokane has gone 2 for 2 in the award named for one of its own.
At the NWAACC Hall of Fame banquet held Thursday in Vancouver, CCS was awarded the Dr. Maury Ray Athletic Director’s Cup, the NWAACC all-sports trophy named after the longtime CCS athletic director. The Sasquatch have won the award in both years of its existence.
At the same banquet, men’s golf coach Scott Kramer, women’s track and field coach Jason Cash and women’s cross country coach Sean McLachlan were recognized as coach of the year in their respective sports.
Also, CCS won six of the 15 Baden NWAACC Player of the Year awards: Jessica Mildes (Riverside HS) – women’s cross country and women’s track and field; Daniel Schofield (Mead HS) – men’s cross country; Tasha Luu (Colville HS) – women’s soccer; Riley Holsinger (North Central) – women’s basketball; Evan Omelia – men’s golf.
High school scene
The Greater Spokane League, in conjunction with the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, announced the spring winners of the NECA/IBEW GSL Award for demonstrating superior balance in academics, athletics and community involvement.
A girl and boy are selected from each school. The winners:
