Derek Bayley, a Lakeland High graduate who has signed with Washington State University, fired rounds of 71 and 74 Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club to win a U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifier.
Bayley finished five strokes ahead of Sean Packer, of Auburn, Washington. Bayley claimed the lone qualifying spot for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship July 14-19 at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas.
Lilac tourney accepting entries
Entries are being accepted for the 51st Lilac City Invitational, which will be held July 10-13 at The Fairways.
The 72-hole tournament returned in 2012 after a five-year absence. Former University of Idaho standout Russell Grove shot an 8-under 64 in the final round to capture the Joe Durgan Memorial Trophy and a $5,000 first-place check last year.
Last year’s event drew 30 pros and 39 amateurs. Golfers can register at golfthefairways.com or by calling (509) 747-8418. Tournament proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Spokane.
