Out & About: Fly fishing vets… Mt. Spokane passes

OUTRULE – It’s transition time at Mount Spokane State Park.

Grooming on the nordic ski trails will end for the season on Monday.

Sno-Park seasonal vehicle passes can be used for parking through April 30, said Steve Christensen, park manager.

In addition, Discover Passes will become valid on vehicles at Mount Spokane starting Tuesday.

“There’s still good skiing and snowshoeing,” he said. “One of my favorite times to snowshoe is when the downhill ski area closes.”

Mt. Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park closes for the season April 13.

Fly-fishing vets on Trout TV

OUTCAST – Spokane anglers treating disabled veterans with fly fishing therapy will be featured on Trout TV today, 4 p.m., on KAYU Fox 28. Trout TV host Hilary Hutcheson teams with Crab Creek fly fishing guide G.L. Britton and volunteers from Project Healing Waters to help vets catch fish and cast away their anxieties from injuries sustained in Vietnam and Iraq. Filming of the show was featured in The Spokesman-Review Outdoors section on May 12, 2013.

• Trout TV will feature Yakima River fly fishing on April 6.

Cyclists rule in Yellowstone

OUTPEDAL – Nearly 50 miles of roads in Yellowstone Park were opened to bicyclists only this week as crews work to clear snow from other roads. Vehicle traffic will be allowed on some roads starting April 18, depending on weather.

Cyclists need to be prepared for weather, bison, bears and wolves.

Cyclists can call (307) 344-2107 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays for updated road-access information.

Fishing licenses expiring

OUTDATED – Washington’s 2013-14 fishing licenses will expire Monday night. New season licenses will be required starting Tuesday.

Trail work volunteers needed

OUTROUTE – The  Washington Trails Association needs volunteers for trail projects at Iller Creek in April and later at Mount Spokane and Salmo-Priest Wilderness. Sign up: wta.org.

Bluebird box plans available

OUTHOUSE – Bluebird tenants are arriving and looking for space to nest raising their young. Bluebird boxes should be cleaned out to welcome the new families, Idaho Fish and Game biologists say.
