Rain wins in Classic
Ivan Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to knot the score in the top of the sixth inning, and the Knucksies and Wizards played to a 4-4 tie in the rain-shortened Hall of Fame Classic in Cooperstown, N.Y. on Saturday.
The sixth annual classic at Doubleday Field also featured home runs by former major league stars Hideki Matsui, Luis Gonzalez, and Jack Wilson. It was called before the bottom of the sixth began.
The teams were divided into American League and National League squads, with Hall of Fame knuckleballer Phil Niekro managing the Knucksies of the A.L. and Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith managing the Wizards of the N.L.
The game was scoreless until Matsui brought the crowd to life with a towering home run over the 312-foot sign in right field.
Orioles get Hundley
The Baltimore Orioles have acquired catcher Nick Hundley from the San Diego Padres in a trade for left-handed reliever Troy Patton.
The 30-year-old Hundley hit .271 with a home run and three RBIs in 33 games with the Padres this season. The Orioles are currently operating without starting catcher Matt Wieters, who’s on the disabled list with a strained right elbow.
Patton was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in nine appearances with Baltimore. He missed April while serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive for a banned amphetamine last year.
The Orioles also received cash considerations from San Diego in the deal.
With Patton off the roster and Hundley not yet with the team, Baltimore recalled infielder Steve Lombardozzi from Triple-A Norfolk before Saturday’s game.
OF Victorino to DL
The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. Outfielder Daniel Nava was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Victorino aggravated a hamstring injury from spring training running to first base in the ninth inning of Friday night’s 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
Victorino missed 22 games early in the season.
“We think, through the exams so far, it’s not as severe as the injury at spring training, but in combination with hamstring and just overall physical ailments that he’s battling right now, the two-week break is needed,” manager John Farrell said.
In 21 games this season, Victorino hit .242 with one homer and 10 RBIs.
