Sweep moves CCS volleyball closer to first place
Jenna Widman had 13 kills Wednesday as the Community Colleges of Spokane volleyball team moved closer to first place in the East Region with a 3-0 sweep of Yakima Valley at Spokane Falls Community College.
Emily Russell added 25 assists and Lizzy Ridley 20 digs for the Sasquatch (29-11, 10-2), who moved within one-half game of idle Blue Mountain (10-1 East). CCS has matches remaining at Columbia Basin on Friday and at home against Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.
Ashley Hayes had nine kills for the Yaks (7-19, 4-8).
Women’s soccer
Sheleiyah Wilson scored an unassisted goal at 47 minutes to give the Shoreline Dolphins (12-6-3) a 1-0 win over North Idaho in the first round of the Northwest Athletic Conference playoffs at Shoreline, Washington.
Wilson gathered up an errant pass about 35 yards out, beat two defenders and scored just inside the left post.
Shoreline goalkeeper Melissa Schuetze stopped breakaways by NIC’s Meghan Pagano and Elly Priddy.
The Dolphins will play at Lane on Saturday. The Cardinals finished 9-3-9.
Men’s golf
Jared du Toit tied for 10th place and Idaho completed its fall season by placing eighth at the Warrior Classic at Makai Golf Club in Princeville, Hawaii.
Du Toit shot a final-round 71 to finish at 10-under-par 206, 10 shots behind medalist Frederick Wedel of Pepperdine.
Idaho senior Aaron Cockerill tied for 29th at 213.
The Vandals finished at 848, 39 shots behind champion Georgia Tech in the 15-team field. Arizona State (824) was runner-up.
Prep volleyball
Jacey Johnson had 22 kills and Corynn Anderson added eight digs and four aces as host Oakesdale defeated St. John-Endicott 3-1 in a District 9 1B semifinal. The Nighthawks will face Pomeroy for the district championship at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Colfax.
At Pomeroy, the host Pirates (21-3) swept Colton 3-0 in the other semifinal.
Saturday’s play opens with two loser-out matches: Garfield-Palouse vs. St. John-Endicott at 10 a.m. and Colton vs. LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus at 11:30. Two teams will advance to the Nov. 14-15 state tournament at the Yakima SunDome.
Girls soccer
Jocelyn Cook-Cox scored at 27 minutes, assisted by Hailey Lesser, as Lakeside (13-3) captured the District 7 1A championship with a 1-0 win over Freeman (12-5) at Gonzaga Prep.
Both teams advance to the state tournament, Lakeside as the No. 1 seed and Freeman as the No. 2.
