State 2B/1B volleyball: Colfax sweeps into semifinals

YAKIMA – Colfax’s volleyball state tournament juggernaut rolled on in the SunDome on Friday as the Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2B volleyball state tournament, defeating Life Christian and Adna.

Colfax is in the semifinals for the 11th straight year and on track for the program’s 13th state title. 

“We had some jitters and they served well,” Colfax coach Sue Doering said after beating Life Christian 25-13, 25-21, 25-20. “Once our kids settled down and started passing like they know how to we were OK. And Kori Goodwin stepped up at the service line with eight big points.”

Goodwin, the Bulldogs senior setter, had three aces in that run which closed out the Eagles. Colfax led 11-10 when she took serve and the Bulldogs were in the clear at 19-11 when the run concluded.

The Bulldogs defeated Adna 25-10, 25-12, 25-15 in a late quarterfinal.

Reardan, the champions in 2010, 2011 and 2012, was knocked out of title contention immediately by Wahkiakum, 21-25, 25-17, 11-25, 25-18, 15-13. The Indians were eliminated by Darrington later, 25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23.

Northwest Christian split two matches, losing its opener to La Conner, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 but defeating  Morton-White Pass, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 to advance. The Crusaders will play Darrington at 11 am this morning.

Davenport won its opener, beating Napavine but the Gorillas lost a late quarterfinal to Mossyrock, 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20. The Gorillas will play the loser of the late Colfax-Adna quarterfinal at 11 am today.

Class 1B

Odessa-Harrington advanced with an opening round win over Providence Classical Christian, 26-24, 25-23, 25-8. The Titans were beaten by Pomeroy in a quarterfinal match, 25-14, 25-6, 25-17.

Odessa-Harrington will play Quilcene in consolation play today at 11 am.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline zipped into the semifinals, besting St. John-Endicott, 24-26, 25-12, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11 in the quarterfinals. The Warriors breezed past Naselle in the opening round, 25-5, 25-14, 25-19. They will play Sunnyside Christian at 1 p.m.

St. John-Endicott will play Mount Vernon Christian at 11 am. The Eagles knocked off Riverside Christian in the opening round, 19-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-18.

Republic was knocked into the consolation round by Christian Faith, 25-21, 25-11, 25-6. The Tigers remained alive by beating Lake Quinault, 25-15, 16-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-8 and will play Klickitat-Glenwood this morning at 9 a.m.
