Spokane Poetry: Community Cover Slam - Competitive performance poetry. Poets have three minutes to present their original work without costumes, props or musical accompaniment. At this week’s slam poets are allowed to read poetry written by a Spokane poet. Written permission from original poet must be presented. Audience judges chosen at random score the poem and the highest cumulative score after two rounds of poetry wins the $50 grand prize. This is loud and raucous, and audience participation is highly encouraged. Content is not censored. Sign-ups at 7 p.m.; slam at 8 p.m. Monday, The Bartlett, 228 W. Author Bonnie Gilbert - Presentation and discussion of “Building for War: The Epic Saga of the Civilian Contractors and Marines of Wake Island in World War II.” Books will be available to purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Friends of the Post Falls Library. Author Molly Gloss - Presenting “Falling From Horses.” In the book, 19-year-old ranch hand Bud Frazer takes off for Hollywood with his sights set on becoming a stunt rider in the movies. On the long bus ride south, Bud meets Lily Shaw, an outspoken young woman with her heart set on becoming a screenwriter. Author Joanna Luloff - Luloff served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Baddegama, Sri Lanka, before earning a Master’s of Fine Arts and doctorate. Algonquin Books published her first collection of short stories, “The Beach at Galle Road.” Her short stories have appeared in the Missouri Review, Confrontation, Memorious and New South. She is an assistant professor English at the University of Colorado, Denver. Part of the Gonzaga University Visiting Writers Series. Author Dan Sisson - Presentation and discussion of “The American Revolution of 1800.” The professor and author provides the definitive window into key concepts that have formed the backdrop of America’s democracy: the nature of revolution, stewardship of power, liberty, and the ever-present danger of factions and tyranny. The Welcome: A Public Listening - A group of veterans dealing with post traumatic stress disorder present their stories to the Spokane community through works of music, visual and performance art. The result of a four-day retreat hosted by Warrior Songs that introduces veterans to multiple artistic mediums, this culminating event gives the public an opportunity to witness impactful art pieces and performances, all the while forming a support group and audience for veterans to share their stories through art.
