Give and Take: Sunday letters

Bench Winston

As the sorry saga of the “student athlete,” Jameis Winston, continues at Florida State, I think it is way past time for someone in authority at that university to act.

Dumbus Jameis is an embarrassment to that university. Bobby Bowden brought class to Florida State and Jameis is bringing  ridicule. The alleged rape, and the continuing investigation into how it was investigated, the theft of the crab legs, the totally embarrassing sexist rant, as well as his reported problems with women as far back as high school shows that action is long overdue. Florida State has now replaced Ohio State as the university most likely to be the butt of college football jokes. Go Seminoles!

Since Jimbo Fisher and the athletic director seem to think that winning is so important that Jameis must remain on the team, perhaps the president of Florida State should step in and kick Jameis off the team for the rest of this year. Offer him the chance to return next year if he can stay out of trouble. If he continues in his ways, he can always transfer to Auburn, or of course, Ohio State.

What kind of message is Florida State sending by allowing this very poor example of a “student athlete” to represent that university?

As a final comment, I think the NCAA should institute a new rule in college football. Now if a player loses his helmet he has to come out for one play. I suggest if a player loses his court required monitoring device from his ankle, he should have to come out for two plays!

Ditka stuck in ways

As I try to understand why the Washington NFL team owner refuses to change its obvious denigrating racial name, I have to try to understand how a person like Mike Ditka can say something so ignorant and idiotic as “what are you going to call them, a Brownskin?”

People who believe what once was should always be, will always be what they once were.

I’m sorry Iron Mike, but you are way past your expiration date.
