Daniel Briere’s last-second goal lifts Avalanche over Bruins
NHL: Daniel Briere scored off a rebound with less than a second left in the third period to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 road victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday.
Jamie McGinn also scored for the Avalanche, who had opened the season with two shutout losses. Backup goaltender Reto Berra made 27 saves in his first start of the season.
Boston backup goalie Niklas Svedberg made 28 saves.
The game appeared to be heading to overtime when Svedberg made a pair of stops in the closing minute.
Briere, at the edge of the crease, fired the puck over the sprawling goalie just before time expired after Jan Hejda’s shot from the point. The clock read 0.0, but replays showed the puck crossed the goal line before time expired.
• Anaheim routs Buffalo: Rookie William Karlsson scored the first two goals of his career in leading the Ducks to a 5-1 victory over the winless Sabres in Buffalo, New York.
Ryan Kessler scored on a third-period penalty shot and Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey had a goal each as Anaheim outshot the Sabres 44-12.
• Tampa Bay throttles Montreal: Steven Stamkos scored three goals, Victor Hedman had a career-high four points and the Lightning beat the Canadiens 7-1 in Tampa, Florida.
Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat and Vladislav Namestnikov had the other Tampa Bay goals. Stamkos tied Martin St. Louis for the team record with eight career hat tricks.
• Ottawa beats Panthers: Craig Anderson made 30 saves, Clarke MacArthur scored a power-play goal and the Ottawa Senators defeated Florida 1-0 in front of the smallest home crowd in Panthers history in Sunrise, Florida.
The announced crowd of 7,311 broke Florida’s previous franchise low of 10,063 against Carolina on Oct. 31, 2007.
N.C. State players face suspension
FOOTBALL: North Carolina State suspended seven players – including its leading tackler and a second defensive starter – for this week’s game against Louisville for their involvement in a BB gun incident, coach Dave Doeren said.
Doeren said the players were playing a game with the BB guns at an off-campus residence last week and “made a mistake in not recognizing that this activity could have resulted in someone being injured.”
Among the suspended players are linebacker Jerod Fernandez and safety Josh Jones. Fernandez leads the team and is tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 58 tackles, and also has a team-best two interceptions. Jones has 38 stops, one sack and an interception.
The other suspended players were receivers Johnathan Alston and Jumichael Ramos, defensive linemen Justin Jones and Pharoah McKever and cornerback Mike Stevens.
• Hoosiers lose Sudfeld: Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld will miss the rest of the season after separating his non-throwing shoulder in Saturday’s loss at Iowa.
Sudfeld is expected to be replaced by freshman Chris Covington against No. 8 Michigan State this weekend.
• NFL veteran passes away: Elbert Drungo Jr., who played 120 games at tackle/guard over nine seasons with the Houston Oilers and a season with Buffalo, has died. He was 71.
Drungo died Saturday at home after battling cancer for the past six years, his wife, Deborah, said.
Tinkov offers bonus for cycling trifecta
MISCELLANY: Russian billionaire Oleg Tinkov said his 1 million euro challenge is “no joke” and will help develop cycling’s popularity.
The owner of the Tinkoff-Saxo cycling team is trying to entice Alberto Contador and his three biggest rivals to compete in all three Grand Tours with a 1 million euro bonus that the quartet would share if they commit to racing at the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta in 2015.
Tinkov also hopes to convince Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali to be on the starting line of the three-week events.
• Spinks hospitalized: Former heavyweight boxing champion Leon Spinks, 61, is in a Las Vegas hospital after a second operation for abdominal problems.
The 1976 Olympic gold medalist who catapulted to fame by beating Muhammad Ali in 1978 had the second surgery in recent days after complications from the first emergency surgery.
His wife updated the Associated Press on her husband’s condition, saying “it’s going to be a long road ahead, but he’s strong and he’s starting to recover.” Brenda Spinks does not know how long he will be hospitalized but the family is optimistic.
• Wise Dan ruled out: Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan won’t run in the upcoming Breeders’ Cup because of an ankle injury.
Owner Morton Fink said the injury to Wise Dan’s right front fetlock likely occurred during his victory in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 4.
• Former Belmont winner dies: Jazil, the 2006 Belmont Stakes winner, has died. He was 11. Shadwell Farm announced in a release that Jazil died from injuries sustained Saturday in a paddock accident.
